I'm interested in reading about Christian mysticism.

No offense to the other religions but I'm specifically interested in the Christian form. (I have books on Sufism and others.)

Recommendations, anyone?

The classic is still Mysticism by Evelyn Underhill, although it's nearly a century old. von Hugel wrote in the same period, and his Mystical Element of Religion is more specifically focused on one figure. There are also lots of modern accounts, including three volumes on Christian Spirituality which focuses on mysticism and other spiritual practices in the World Spirituality series.

Thanks, Anglimuse,

I just put the Underhill title on hold at my local library.

The link in your post seemed to be the wrong one. This is the one I found

Any more contemporary works you enjoyed?

Do you want books about Christian mysticism or do you want to read some Christian mystics? If the latter, I would suggest Thomas Merton for a more recent view. The Cloud of Unknowing and works by Julian of Norwich, Meister Eckhart, Hildegard of Bingen and St John of the Cross are older classics.

John,

Thanks. I'm open to reading about it from both angles. I had heard of the names you listed except Meister Eckhart.

I put the "Cloud of Unknowing" on hold at my library.

I just joined this website so I don't have a library, but I love Mysticism. I've read evelyn's book, I think it's a little overburdened. I think Aldous Huxley's perennial philosophy is better, though it is more interfaith. I would highly recommend Inner Christianity by Richard Smoley. He can lead you to more authors in esoteric christianity. esoteric christianity is similar to mysticism. I also recommend theosophical.org to view some free lectures. I recommend Richard Smoley lectures and Ron Miller lectures.

Michael,

I had it in my head that Aldus Huxley was an atheist. I have nothing against atheists but I don't associate them with mysticism! I'll give him a second look.
