I read on an Amazon forum that we can get free e-magazine subscriptions from Calibre; so why should we subscribe using Amazon? I checked out Calibre, but I guess I'm stupid because I can't figure out how to get free magazine subscriptions there. (I was interested in "Foreign Affairs.")

The website seems to be a site like LT, but for ebooks only. Has anyone had experience with Calibre? Any opinions on the Calibre website?

As far as I know, Calibre is a download, not a website depository. However, looking at the program itself, which I use to store and organize ebooks which I have on my computer, there is a Fetch News button which allows for RSS feeds. No magazine subs as far as I can tell, unless they're available via RSS feed.

I don't know the answer to your question. Like AuntMarge, I have only used it for cataloging and trying to convert book formats and/or metadata. However, there are people with extensive experience in Calibre on the mobileread.com forums (http://www.mobileread.com/forums/index.php). You might want to ask there also.

>auntmarge64 & k4k: Thanks very much. I was a little wary about getting involved with Calibre; but I guess it's okay. I'll check the mobileread forums (I had never heard of mobileread either! So doublethanks!) If I learn how to download free magazine subscriptions, I'll let you know.

A new version (0.6.0) has been released.

Calibre now has the "recipes" to fetch and download 122 English-language periodicals, along with a good collection of periodicals in other languages (currently: Bosnian, Catalan, Chinese, Croatian, Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Portuguese, Serbian and Spanish!).

From within the Caliber program (which you can download here:
http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/download
for Windows, MacOS, Linux)

Then: Fetch News > Schedule News Download > Choose Language > Choose periodical.

It works great. (I have no connection to Calibre at all, but find it a great program.)

Bodhisattva,

Do you know if you can edit the metadata properly for the kindle. Some of the books I have downloaded from mobileread, do not sort properly in Author or title mode. When I change the metadata, somehow I also change the formatting of the book. Also, it would then sort properly by title, but not by author. I usually like to sort by title, but sometimes I like to sort by Author as well. I tried to follow the directions everyone gave me, but finally gave up. Just wondering if the new version of Calibre has made this easier.

Thanks,

k4k

bodhisattva: Thanks for the link. I'm too tired now to check it out, but I will asap. I went to visit my daughter for 3 or 4 days on August 1st, and I ended up catching a virus or something. Now I'm back home 10 days later, still a bit under the weather.

re: Metadata -- Yes, you can edit metadata in calibre.

The buttons along the top of the screen:

1. Add books
2. Edit meta information
3. Convert E-books
4. View
5. Fetch news (download newspapers and magazines)
6. Send to device
7. Save to disk
8. Remove books
9. Preferences

Hope this helps.
