Hi there!
I would be interested to know if anybody could tell me about a scholarly edition of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, i.e. a Norton commentary or the like.
I have a group of high-school students working on the play and would like them to work on subjects such as period, genre, sources of inspiration, reception, interpretations and the like.

I discovered a wonderful book (itemized below) about the original production of Earnest that is chock full of everything Oscar and everything Earnest. This would really flesh out your students' study.
It was, however, difficult to find. I had learned about the book from a cast member when The Importance of Being Earnest was being performed at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR in 2006. The cast used it extensively while putting the production together as there are many historical references as to costuming, sets and roles.
I eventually found the book on Amazon.co.uk for £23 (about $50 w/shipping). It's very comprehensive, lots of history, ~400 pages, lots of pics.
