I was thinking of calling this "Upcoming releases", but this might be more fun/interesting. (Also we kind of side-tracked the 'new releases' thread. ^-~)
Which (fantasy) books are you coveting and desperate to get your hands on?
I have a preorder out for:
* Kelley Armstrong's Angelic (which, amazingly, has a touchstone). It'll - somewhat scarily - be my first brush with Armstrong.
* Elizabeth Bear's Bone & Jewel Creatures, which refuses to provide me with a touchstone.
* Girl Genius volumes 4-6 by Phil & Kaya Foglio.
Beyond that, I need to get my grubby little paws on
* Dark Moon of Avalon by Anna Elliott
* The Fairies in Tradition and Literature by Katharine Briggs
* Strange and Secret Peoples: Fairies and Victorian Consciousness by Carole G. Silver.
The latter two are non-fiction and sound absolutely fa. sci. na. ting! Said the girl who rarely, if ever, reads non-fiction. They'll make some great choices for the Once upon a Time IV challenge, though, if it'll be hosted next year. ^-^ Provided I can hold off reading them for so long...
What about you? What books are you looking forward to being able to add to your TBR pile?

Eek!
Well..as for new books I'm basically just waiting for A Dance with Dragons by George RR Martin and Dark Moon of Avalon by Anna Elliot at the moment. I'm not holding my breath for A Dance with Dragons though!

Mind, they don't have to be preorders. Anything goes - as long as you don't yet own it. ^-~
I know what you mean about ADwD... I'll pick it up when I see it in the store (in the format I want), but I admit I'm not holding my breath either. Too many other books to read!

regenesis and Conspirator I know they are both published ... in the US. I'm not there though, and it could be as much a s year until I can get my hands on them. Argh.
traitor's knot as an ebook. I have the two previous as ebooks, and the 8th in the series is also available, but TK the 7th book for some bizarre reason can't be found. I've emailed the publishers who responded quite quickly, but the book still isn't available.
Waiting for the third part of the final chronicles of thomas covenant to come out, not sure this even has a provisional name yet.
The next Harry Dresden
Plus of course all those on my wishlist that I just haven't got around to buying yet.

I really want Shalador's Lady by Anne Bishop. It comes out on March 2. And it has a touchstone.
6twilightnocturne
^^ Looks interesting #5. I've never read anything by Anne Bishop. Is that part of a current trilogy or anything?
7sparrowbunny
#4 reading_fox, is there any chance you could order them online sooner or do you like your covers to match? (*knows that feeling quite well - adamant that if she can't get the same covers of a book in a series, she at least get books the same height*)
#6 twilight, I know enough to answer that yes it's part of a series, but I don't know if it's works as a stand-alone or where it goes in the series or anything. I have the very first book on my TBR pile somewhere.

6: twilightnocturne - it is the second book so it is not a trilogy. i guess it could be, but i am not counting on it. the last book was The Shadow Queen. touchstone for the The Shadow Queen isn't working. odd. The Shadow Queen probably works as standalone, but there might be references to things past things that happened in the main trilogy because it takes place after it and the reason the land is the way it is, well, all that was in the trilogy.
anyway, the main (and so for the only trilogy) black jewels trilogy (daughter of the blood, heir to shadows, queen of the darkness) is done and is one of the best series i have ever read. the others black jewel books (tangled webs, Dreams Made Flesh, the invisible ring) are more like spinoffs. Dreams Made Flesh is a set of short stories that explains things in between the main three books of the trilogy. tangled webs is good, but i don't think its stand alone and you will probably need to read the main trilogy first. the invisible ring can stand more or less by itself. it also takes place before the events in the main trilogy, but i think it was published after.
okay, this is turning into a longer post than i wanted, but i really really love the black jewels books. i guess that is obvious. if you read the black jewels books, the first book of the trilogy (daughter of the blood) is probably the one to start with.

I am looking forward to book 5 of the fever series by karen moning shadowfever
I also liked the Ann Bishop trilogy but was really disappointed in the spin off novels.

also awaiting Black Magic Sanction by Kim Harrison. I love this series

#8 - Have you read The Shadow Queen yet? It looked interesting, but I wasn't sure if I wanted to read it since it doesn't seem to feature the main characters.
I'm waiting for Wings of Wrath to come out in paperback. I've loved the Magister Trilogy so far, and CS Friedman's books in general.

#11 Narilka - Ooh, I'd forgotten about Wings of Wrath! I'm waiting for the paperback too. Feast of Souls has been my first brush with C.S. Friedman and it's been really positive. ^-^
I've kind of, sadly, begun to give up seeing the book in paperback, though. It always feels like it takes shorter when you're not waiting on it...

The two I'm most looking forward to are Changes by Jim Butcher and The White Road by Lynn Flewelling. I'm very excited about those two!

11: Narilka - Yes, I've read The Shadow Queen. Sadi and Lucivar and the rest make appearances. They connect the real main characters of the book. Sadi's more soul type wounds from his years as a pleasure slave effect how he responds. It is worth reading for that alone! But, yeah, the book isn't about them, but I thought it was pretty good just the same.
Hey is anyone looking forward to the First Lord's Fury by Jim Butcher? Comes out in December.

#12 Shanra - If you like Feast of Souls you'll like her Coldfire Trilogy which starts with Crown of Shadows. It's about time I reread it again. That series is also where I got my user name, though its only a minor character.
#14 spoiledfornothing - Hmm, I may have to pick that up when it comes out in paperback then.

Divine Misdemeanors by Laurell Hamilton is coming out soon - anyone looking forward to it?
19jimmaclachlan
No, Laurell K. Hamilton was a favorite with her early Anita Blake books, but she became, repetitive & boring with her latest novels. I skimmed through one of the last ones & she basically summarized all the action in the last chapter - what should have been the book. Before that she spent chapter upon chapter on weird sexual situations - not even good porn.
If I had a category for 'Fallen Authors', she'd top the list. I've heard "Skin Trade" is a bit more on track, but unless she does it completely, I'll never buy another of her books. I actually quit buying them several books ago. At one time, books 2 - 10, I bought them immediately.

Skin Trade was lots better than the last few AB books. Little to No sex. :P Lots of Edward. No JC, no Richard (because it took place in a different city). and a truly creepy morgue scene with her partnering with a serial killer who wants her or probably will try her sooner or later, but who was there because he'd experience with the way the dead people had been killed. that was fun - ab hasn't been that scared of someone in many, many books.
But Divine Misdemeanors isn't an AB book, it is a merry gentry book and the first chapter is out; it opens with a murder scene.

#21 - Thanks. I quit Merry Gentry for the same reason. Please let me know if that is better, too.
I really liked Edward. "Obsidian Butterfly" was good.
Hamilton does make very neat worlds. Hopefully she's on her way back.

21: jimmaclachlan - yeah it was. the serial killer in ob? i forget his name, that's who i was talking about in the morgue scene. and hopefully Divine Misdemeanors will be better - she is preggers now. was preggers at the end of the last book and than quit faeiry entirely.
23jimmaclachlan
#22 - Please just call me Jim. How may I refer to you?
Olaf, the big guy that wanted to 'play' with her. He was good - well, very bad - & creepy. That might be worth a read then.
I didn't read the last book or two, I guess. MG should be pregnant. She was trying hard enough. I doubt she'll stay out of the court long though. She was bringing it back to life. It's pretty clear she has to go back & take over from her aunt.
I'll see if I can't swap for the books at some point, but I won't buy anything new from her. I'm expressing my disapproval through my wallet - not that it matters more than a gnat passing gas in a wind storm. It's just the principle of the thing.
Hamilton heard the complaints & ignored them. Her ratings on Amazon dropped significantly over the last 6 books or so. I read a 5 star review that said something like, "I don't know why people are complaining. If you don't like repetitive sex scenes, you shouldn't buy her latest books." That's one heck of a thing to say in a 5 star review!

jim - yep olaf. yeah merry probably won't succeed in staying out of the court, but she's giving it a good try. starting her own sithin and all. :P
you could get the books from the library which is what i do. i haven't actually bought a lkh book past blue moon. :P it was all downhill after that, with ob as a brief break.
lol i haven't read the reviews in a long time. they are either very negative or very postive and there is very little in between which is where i fall.

Add the latest Pratchett book to my covet list. Not that I'm far enough in the Discworld series to be up to that one yet, but still!
26Narilka
Picked up Wings of Wrath today. This ones off my covet list!
27sparrowbunny
Oooh, Narilka, I have to ask: which format is it? (The cover I see on your profile suggests it's the hardcover format, but it might've been released in mass market now. *hopes so, wants her covers to match and wants to read more of the story, eventually*)
28Narilka
Its mass market. Has the same cover art as the hardback. The publisher had it listed to release Feb 2, but it was on the shelf at Borders yesterday.
29Narilka
That's in the US I might add. No idea what the international release schedule looks like. And it picks up right where the first one left off without any recap of what went on before.
30sparrowbunny
Thank you! I'm so, so glad to see that they are releasing a MMP of it. I've only been seeing a trade paperback here and... Neither size nor format matched and I kept on not seeing a MMP for pre-order, so I figured there wasn't going to be one.
But there is! I can have my covers match! *happy dance*

I want Unperfect Souls by Mark Del Franco. Came out today and the library does not have it yet. It is an urban fantasy and doesn't have the usual complement of vampires and werewolves. Instead it has sidhe, fey, druids and little to no sex. :P
32sandyg210
I also want Unperfect Souls by Mark Del Franco. And First Drop of Crimson byJeanine Frost, Silver Bourne by Patricia Briggs and A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire.
33flemmily
I'm also coveting
Anne Bishop's Shalador's Lady I really adore that series. Loved the original trilogy and I'm glad she didn't stop there - I like being able to revisit the world and/or characters
and
Patricia Briggs' Silver Borne. I also saw somewhere that Briggs is rewriting Masques for Fall 2010 - I've read her other earlier fantasy and enjoyed it, and I'm excited she's going back to it. I think her writing is better nowadays as well, so I'm prepared to be blown away.

*slight wave* I thought I'd give a little update on my original covetted list. I have all but two of the books now.
Bone and Jewel Creatures by Elizabeth Bear and Dark Moon of Avalon by Anna Elliott are still not available in my house. The first should arrive somewhere next month, I hope, but the second has been delayed until autumn. (When the whole series will receive an overhaul. I'm quite curious what'll happen to the covers.)
Beyond that... I'm not really covetting any new books. Want badly, yes. Covet, no.
