Having just read "The Reliable Wife" by Robert Goolrick with his extremely vivid description of a Wisconsin winter, I'm wondering if other authors have tackled the subject. None come to mind, off the top of my head. Anyone?

It's only a coincidence that we are, at this very moment, recovering from an ice storm.

PrairieDogg, try The Children's Blizzard by David Laskin. It's a well-researched, true story of the Blizzard of January 12, 1888 in the Nebraska/Dakota area. Besides just the (very sad) story of survival and non-survival, the author gives a very good lesson in meteorology. I would highly recommend it!

PS love the dog on your profile page!

Midwestern winter--at least SW Wisconsin edition--is an uncredited character who (?) helps set the tone/feel of Tom Drury's "The Driftless Area."

Willa Cather - My Antonia.

The first winter that Antonia and her family spent in Nebraska territory was one to remember.

Another one: Winter Thunder by Mari Sandoz.

My brain is working piecemeal tonight. Sorry.

Giants in the Earth might be a good book club choice for this group!
