Pardon me if this is a well-trodden subject.

I just acquired my first Kindle and I am now realizing that book collecting has become more complicated for me. In addition to having a collection of physical books, I also am building collections of Amazon Kindle and Google Book Search books. Can I use LibraryThing to track these e-titles too?

I am also struggling with the question of how to manage my book buying investments among different clouds: the "physical" cloud, the Amazon cloud, and the GBS cloud.

The "physical" cloud can't be read electronically.

The Amazon cloud requires an Amazon account, but not necessarily a Kindle (as long as I have Kindle for PC).

The GBS cloud can't be synchronized with the Amazon cloud, but books can be manually converted from GBS and transferred to the Amazon cloud.

All very confusing.

I use LT for everything I own or read, and I'm not particular about which edition I add to LT as long as it's the same text equivalent. I don't use tag clouds to differentiate, if that's what you mean. I use two collections (Print and Kindle) to distinguish between print and electronic.

All collections 585
Print 263
Kindle 168
101010 Challenge 95
Genealogy 61
Reference 73

Abandoned 19
Favorites 6
Currently reading 4
To read 86
Your library 385
Read but unowned 145

Requested 1
Borrowed 1

I see you use your LT library only for books you own, but that shouldn't make a difference. You just won't be using "read but unowned" and a few of the others. You could have collections for print, Kindle, Google, Gutenberg, etc., plus just an ebook collection in which all of the ebooks were included, or you could use an ebook collection for all the ebooks and leave notes in the private comments area so you'd know which was Amazon, Google, etc.

You can also see the overlap between categories to a limited extent by going to your Statistics/Memes page, then clicking on Collections at the bottom of the left hand column. Here's mine: http://www.librarything.com/profile/auntmarge64/stats/collections. You'll see there is one book I own in both print and Kindle editions.

I'm not sure if I'm actually addressing your concern....

Great answer! I'm actually still stuck at a more fundamental problem, how do I add the Kindle books to "My Books"?

Ah. Well, the first question is whether you want to be edition-specific. That is, do you care if the biblio data is for the actual ebook edition or if a print edition's info would be satisfactory.

A book is a book is a book! Nod to Gertrude Stein.

Well, I can't speak to your cloud issues per se, bu for local management of an ebook collection do consider looking into Calibre. (It's basically iTunes for ebooks.)

http://calibre-ebook.com/

I've been reading ebooks on a bewildering variety of platforms since the early 90's; this software works great with my Kindle and is really helping me consolidate my various ebooks.

Goblin, do you keep a copy of all your Amazon and other redownloadable books your computer, or just a record in Caliber, or what?

It used to be possible to add the specific kindle addition from Amazon. That no longer seems to be possible -- or at least not easy enough for me to do it. Now I just make sure I have the correct publisher and use kindle as a tag. That way, if I have some books by an author as hard copies and others as ebooks, they still all segregate together.

As auntmarge said, it depends whether you are very set on getting the precise edition.

Have fun,

Right now, I don't have backups of all of my ebooks, no. But that is the goal! I have several hundred ebooks at Fictionwise.com, fewer than 50 at Amazon.com, and about 100 at Baen.com's Webscriptions. Most of those are now in my Calibre library, but not all of them... I just discovered Calibre a couple of months ago, and haven't had time to massage my library into shape!

Your Kindle books are backed up at Amzon when you buy them. You do not need to keep another backup on your computer. If something happens to your Kindle (lost or broken), you can get all of your books back when it is repaired or you get a new one.
I don't know haw the others work.
