Library Book Sales

I'd like to make a list of library book sales and library used book stores in Oregon. I suppose I could go county by county and find all the library web sites, but before I undertake that task, does anyone have info that can get me started? I am particularly interested in stores run by libraries or library "friends" groups.

For example, I think that the Multnomah County library still has the Title Wave bookstore. But do they still have an annual book sale? Do they have any special event sales? What about neighboring counties? Or elsewhere in Oregon? I can see myself planning road trips . . . .

Yes, we still have The Title Wave. Here's their website. There's nothing on the site about a book sale, but I think they had an annual sale not too long ago.

Here in Beaverton, the Beaverton City Library has The Book Corner used bookstore, run by Friends of the Beaverton City Library.

BBCode is a type of formatting code used on some message boards. It sort of looks like a simplified HTML, using brackets rather than .

Oh, so BBCode is what we use when we're doing the Touchstones here on this board. So I guess we can use both here. cool!

^ Nope, BBCode doesn't work. The brackets here are not BBCode, but are accomplishing something else, I think, and trying to use BBCode here causes the post to think that an author or title is being linked to. "b" should be "bold," but LibraryThing thinks it's a touchstone author. :-)

The downtown Mult Co Lib also has a store -- I don't think the books are ex-library books, I think they may be used donations from friends of the library...

RE: Title Wave

Well, I just made my first visit to the Multnomah County used book store, The Title Wave (201 NE Knott, just west of MLK), and have to give it a mixed review.

The prices were great (most hardbacks $2 or $3) and the condition of the books was very good considering that they are ex-library books. But the fiction selection was pretty feeble. The books were mostly recently published and unknown (although they also had a mystery section that may have contained popular authors but I didn't go through it carefully). It looked like most of the fiction section books are duplicate copies of newer books that weren't circulating much. If you are just looking for something to read, you can probably find several books that would be entertaining. But I was armed with a list of particular books (most of them prize winners or on some other "must read" list) and I couldn't find anything.

The non-fiction selection was better than the fiction. There were a lot of great cookbooks, as well as books on house stuff, gardening, and hobbies (no scrapbooking, though, which is what I was looking for). The biography section also looked pretty extensive.

Finally, they had quite a few audio books at incredibly cheap prices (many were $1.25). Most of them were cassettes, but they had a few cds. With no way to make sure they work and no returns, you take a risk. But for the price, it isn't a big risk.

So, all in all, worth stopping in now and again, but it won't become one of my haunts. I may prefer the Friends' store at the main library since it sounds like that is where they sell the books people donate. There may be a wider fiction selection.

The one downtown at Central is a pretty small space. I haven't looked at the books there, they sell chachkas too, which is what I've been shopping for when I've been there. I can't imagine they have tons of books in there unless they have a secret passageway. Good to hear about Title Wave, thanks for the report.

Powells Books has an annual sale at Pioneer Square downtown - I think it's in the mid to late summer. It's several days of a sale of thousands and thousands of books, set up on tables in big tents. You have to be willing to plow through piles of books - they separate them by category, but that's about it. I've gotten some great buys there.

Friends of the Multnomah County library actually has two annual book sales - one in fall, one in spring. See the website (http://www.friends-library.org/) and click on book salses.

Booktique, Friends of the Lake Oswego Public Library, may have some of the cheapest books I've ever come across. A couple thousand books, most a dollar or less. I usually come out of there with two grocery bags full and I haven't even spent $20.

The Multnomah Co. spring book sale is this weekend. www.friends-library.org/booksale/spring -- exciting!

I went to the Multnomah Co. Spring Sale this morning and was remarkably successful in finding books on my "Books to Buy" list. It wasn't a huge space, so they didn't have a million books, but the selection was impressive and the prices were very good (most books, paper or hardback, were $1.50; lots for $3; and almost nothing except super fancy stuff was over $6). I was particularly impressed by the selection of "literature" books -- much meatier than run of the mill pop fiction.

The sale continues tomorrow and they keep putting more books out to fill the tables. But tomorrow everything is 50% off today's prices. New inventory, half the price?? I will probably have to shag my way back out to Gresham.

The Corvallis Public Library holds book sales three times each year: at the "Big and Famous Sale" (last weekend of February), at the Fall Festival (mid-September), and at the Holiday Book Sale (first Saturday of December). Also, the Library has an on-going sale with a couple shelves full of a wide variety of books, priced at 50 cents each (and some magazines at 25 cents each).

Well, if you're looking for bookstores own or operated by or in the name of public libraries you can forget southern oregon. All Jackson Co. libraries are closed.

However, living in Ashland we have 4 used bookstores that I know of.

Having a used bookstore catalogue (even if it isn't connected with a library) would be really cool.

Like the coast, I love going on vacation to Seaside and checking out the used bookstores. A town isn't a town without an independently run bookstore. Antique shops are also good places to find cool books.

I had heard that the Jackson County libraries were closing but thought I had read it wrong. That is flabergasting to me. I can think of dozens of county programs I'd cut before I closed a library!

Do you know what they did with all the books? Are they stored away somewhere waiting for a new library levy to pass, and then the libraries will open again? Or is this a permanent situation?

Morrow County (Oregon Trail Library District) and the Umatilla Co. library system have several book sales a year; I will do some poking around and see if I can find dates for you.

Last sale here in Heppner (Oregon Trail) I bought 100+ paperbacks (mostly SF) for a $40 donation (could have paid less). In Pendleton they don't sell many because the city library is brand new and they still have a lot of room (and not much of an aquisitions budget..).

The Friends of the Eugene Public Library have a book sale in April every year and other sales throughout the year, such as Used Mystery Novel Sale.
