I sure hope that hitting the red "X" in the main topic listing means that I'm not going to be seeing the whole damn list of states' events ... I'm tempted to just leave the group. What is the PURPOSE of all this crap, when one's local events is already built into the LT interface? I really don't care what the "news and events" are beyond a 5 mile radius that I'm likely to get to!

Thanks for your note, Btripp. If anyone else has a problem with these discussion threads, I'll remove them. Until then, you can hit the red "x" and move the discussion to the bottom of the page. I thought the thread might introduce a community sense for our interests, but I could be wrong.

Wow, that seems a bit.... harsh...
I don't have a problem with the threads. I appreciate that LT Local gives me notice of immediate events in my area, but if there was a really great event in another part of my state (or a nearby state) this might be an opportunity for advance notice if someone else was really excited about it...
Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Yes, you can always "X" it if you don't like it but it seems a little rude to assume that nobody else will benefit from something just because it's not your cup of tea.

Join us for Glen Ellyn’s First Annual BookFest, Saturday June 19, 2010. This event, sponsored by the Downtown Glen Ellyn Alliance, is designed to showcase local literary talent. To date our featured authors include Elizabeth Berg, Melanie Benjamin, Kelly O’Connor McNees, J.A. Konrath, Tony Romano, Stephanie Cowell and Charlene Baumbich (and M. Clifford!!). In addition to readings and workshops, many stores and restaurants in our historic downtown will host authors to sign and sell books from 10: 00am – 1:00pm.

Love is Murder Mini-Con

Vernon Area Public Library, 300 Olde Half Day Road, Lincolnshire, IL

An afternoon geared toward those interested in mystery/suspense/thrillers - whether as readers or writers. The afternoon features a panel of published mystery writers who will speak about their inspiration, ideas and creative process, and offer insight into the publishing business. Participants will have the opportunity for Q&A, and ample time to mingle with our guest authors and network with other attendees.
Panel discussion will take place from 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. The authors are: Raymond Benson (“Dark Side of the Morgue”), Michael Allen Dymmoch (“M.I.A.,” “The Man Who Understood Cats”), Shane Gericke (“Torn Apart,” “Blown Away”), and Libby Fischer Hellmann (“Set the Night on Fire," "Doubleback”).
A book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase courtesy of Lake Forest Book Store.
Bonus pre-panel activity at 1pm: Prior to the panel discussion, performers from Improv Playhouse will lead an interactive murder mystery. Follow the clues and solve the crime in their play, “Apartment 2B – or NOT To Be!”
Participants in this free mini-conference will be entered in a drawing to win a ticket to the Midwest regional mystery conference, “Love is Murder XII,” to be held at the InterContinental Chicago O’Hare in February 2011. The prize is valued at $250.

I wish someone would write about the Coliseum Ballroom that existed in Benld, IL from Christmas 1924 to last summer. It was built for $50,000 in 1924 and had a balcony, and a very large dance floor, rivaling St. Louis and Chicago. The grocer and his brother sold to the bootleggers and that was the source of funds. One got murdered when he was rumored to turn state's evidence. Big bands like Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey and Guy Lombardo played there on the weekends. It is also on an original section of Old Route 66. Unfortunately, an electrical problem started a fire and it has since been leveled, but not forgotten. Benld had a colorful history in the 1950s. Need I say more?
You can find an unfinished DVD on U-tube. The producer's father was a teacher in Benld and recently passed away at 104?
