And Jocundry's in East Lansing. Both were my favorite bookstores in Michigan. The first I ever entered where you were encouraged to sit in comfortable chairs and peruse your selections. The atmosphere was warm, but hushed like a library. No droning music. Ah, the good old days.

I very much remember when Border's was one Ann Arbor store, and what a great book store it was! I spent so much time browsing in there -- in its great location on State Street just a block north of the main quad. Especially valuable for someone like me who was surviving on a graduate student's budget was the vast selection of wonderful remainders -- much higher quality than what passes for bargain books in today's ubiquitous Borders and other similar stores.

Many thanks, Dave, for reviving the memory!

i was an undergrad when there was still just the one store. books were stacked up on the floor waist high - get too absorbed in reading, turn around too fast and down they'd go!

We've lost two book stores in Ann Arbor: Shaman Drum near the university and After Word on Main St. (a favorite of mine). The wonderful little independent, Nicola's, survives. Hope Border's makes it through its current troubles...

I was in grad school from 1981-83 and always regretted that I had little time to read what I wanted to read and had little money with which to buy books. But going to that Border's was like visiting a great library. And I bought some great posters there that were welcome art in my first few homes.
