Brother Cadfael has always been a favorite for me. Then of course there are the monks in The Name of the Rose. Who are other notable monks of fiction?

There's Ambrosio, from Matthew Lewis' gothic novel, The Monk.

The monks in The Point: The Redemption of Oban Ironbout shed new light on well-known Scripture narratives.

A couple of days ago bought William Brodrick's The Day of the Lie which features a Father Anselm. According to the blurb Brodrick was an Augustinian friar before becoming a barrister. I haven't got round to starting on it yet so we'll have to see.

Barbey d'Aurevilly has a strange and rather horrific monk in L'Ensorcelée.

Hermann Hesse's The Glass Bead Game is about an order of (non-Christian) monks in an imaginary Switzerland-like country. Kristen Lavransdatter's twin sons become monks, an important development in the story. Monks play an important part in The Castle of Otranto. The character Narcissus in another Hesse novel, Narcissus and Goldmund is a monk. Several major characters in Lady Murasaki's The Tale of Genji become Buddhist monks or nuns as a response to the vicissitudes of life.

The Canterbury Murders by E M Powell

Edited to add: Touchstone didn't work when I first posted, then appeared when I edited, then disappeared again. Who know when and if it will appear and disappear again?

<John 5918 I’ve noticed that happens when you go back to edit. Wait a while then open it back up and it should grab them.
