The new Kindle being released at the end of August looks great, esp. the graphite version. Will K2 users be upgrading en masse?

Hi Digifish,

I also started a thread over here:

Too bad we still can't combine these groups.

P. S. What about you? Will you upgrade?

I've only had my K2 for 3 months but I like the idea of a smaller, lighter Kindle in a graphite colour.

Well, it looks like you could get $100 for it at greenearthexchange.com, so that wouldn't be too bad. I paid $379 for my K1!

I don't have any plans to upgrade. Now that we've got Collections on K2, about the only improvement K3 brings that I'd be at all interested in is the smaller size and lighter weight, which would make it a little more convenient to carry in my pocketbook.

One thing I'm not so sure of is the up-down-left-right button. Putting those controls into a frame around the "push it in" button (or whatever we should call it) doesn't give you very much finger-room to the up-down-left-right controls. On the other hand, divorcing the up-down-left-right controls from the push-it-in control might mean fewer accidental push-it-ins, which might mean few accidental purchases. The main reason for accidental purchases, though, is software design, the fact that BUY is the default option on the BOOK DESCRIPTION screen, and unless that default option gets changed we'll still have problems of accidental purchases.

I like the idea of the rubber backing on K3, which will eliminate the slipperiness of K2's back and make K3 easier to hold without accidental dropping. Since I keep my K2 in her mEdge case all the time, that eliminates the slipperiness so that's not an issue that would make me go out and buy a new machine. (And incidentally, I've still got my K1 in her own mEdge for back-up in case anything happens to my K2, which is what I primarily use, although I do continue getting a couple sci-fi magazines on K1 subscription.)

Also, I do note that K3 seems to have a slight improvement in the Collections feature, where you can open a Collection and add multiple books at a time to that Collection. That's a little more convenient if you're just setting up your Collections on a particular machine that you already have oodles of books on, but since I've already got the 600+ files on my K2 sorted into Collections, that's not an issue for me. Even if something happened to make my Collections disappear and I had to re-do everything (as actually did happen to me once), it only takes an hour or two, which isn't worth an upgrade.

Bear in mind that, if you upgrade, you're also going to have to buy a new mEdge (or whatever cover you use) because of the size difference between K2 and K3. Even with the rubber backing of K3, I still think you're going to need a cover of some sort for safe carrying. On the other hand, considering K3's really modest cost, it doesn't seem worthwhile to pay for an extended warranty like I did for K2.

The size reduction also means that the page-forward and page-back controls have been changed. Instead of pressing down with your thumb, it looks like you'll be pressing in from the side with your index finger, although this isn't entirely clear from the Amazon visuals. It's going to change how we hold the device, and I'm not sure it's going to be for the better although I can't really say without giving it a try.

For me, I don't see an upgrade in the offing. I'll probably wait until my K2 battery goes bad or I need to replace her for some other reason.

I was going to purchase the Kindle DX at the end of September but with the release of the new K3, I have jumped earlier. Very excited!!

I'm not planning on upgrading either. I don't think it's worth trading in for. I would get it if I were to pass down my K2 to my sister or husband, but it's really not that necessary for us to have two Kindles. It's not that amazing of a difference to me. If it were like upgrading from a PS2 to a PS3, then I'd think about it.
Although I do hate that my K2 is still under warranty and the K3 comes out.

@CurrerBell- You can add multiple books at a time to a collection on the K2. That's how I organized mine when the update came out. I also noticed how the page controls are, and I agree on the change. Although I'd say that is some sort of de-evolution. I think the K2's page controls are near perfect (maybe just place the prev page button on both sides, but that never bothered me).

I would probably upgrade if the most I'd have to pay is s&h fees. Otherwise, I'm too attached and in love with my current one.

I'm upgrading to the K3 because the new screen is so much clearer, even compared to the K2 with the font hack. But I think younger eyes probably wouldn't care that much. I'm hoping I can reuse my K2 Oberon cover, but maybe by the time I see the K3 and Oberon has their covers for it available I'll decide I can afford one and sell the other. It would probably be close to an even exchange since the new covers will be smaller.

Collections isn't a big deal to me either way. I delete books as I read them, since they're available on Amazon, or, if from elsewhere, I keep a copy on my computer.
