Candle for Kindle

I'm going to buy the Candle reading light for my kindle unless some of you have had a bad experience with it. There's a video review of the Candle on Amazon which pretty much sold me on the device...it shows how small it is, how it fits the kindle etc. When I get it I'll let you know what I think of it. Right now, I'd say it seems expensive...($25 for what is essentially a reading light) and I've read reviews that say the batteries don't last long enough. But I feel extravagant since I think it qualifies for free shipping.

Expensive as hell, but once the price goes down, may be worth it.

I have been reading reviews of the Octovo Solis on Amazon also, and I think I may prefer that one.

Well, I bought 3 Kandles. One for me, my son, my daughter. I'm not impressed. My son is not impressed either. My daughter damaged her Kindle and has not had the opportunity to use the Kandle yet. The light from the Kandle does not equally illuminate the whole page. It gets harder to read the lower down you get on your page. The light from the Kandle is also a hard white light coming from 2 tiny sources. The light from my bedroom lamp is a softer light, which I prefer.
I guess the Kandle is useful for couples when one wishes to sleep and the other to read, but that situation doesn't apply to me.
Conclusion....Thumbs down. Not worth the $25.

Phlox, Did you ever get the Solis? if so, how do you like it? It seems nice and compact. I have the m-Edge light, which has been fine for my purposes, but I just purchased a K3 and I am deciding whether to go with a different light and case, or purchase a new m-Edge case and keep using the light I bought for my K1.

Hey k4k: I also just purchased a K3. It just arrived in the mail and I'm charging it. I don't know the first thing about wifi though. I tried connecting to piccolo and some others but they require a password. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

Any WiFi connection will require passwords if they are normally password-protected. Do you have WiFi at home for your computer? If so, you should be able to connect to that one for sure, because I assume you know the password ;-) Some stores and other places have free WiFi, so you would not need a password. Starbucks, for example - I think, does not require a password.

If you purchased the WiFi kindle ($139) that will be the only way you can connect wirelessly. If you purchased the WiFi + 3G ($189), your kindle will look for a WiFi spot first and, if it finds one, ask if you want to connect to it. If you don't want to, or if there aren't any, it will automatically connect to 3G, EDGE or whatever AT&T cell phone service it finds.

Of course you can always download via USB from your computer.

Thanks k4k. I'm hopeless. I'll head out to find a hotspot tomorrow. Till then my K3 just sits here doing nothing. I phoned Amazon. They asked me how many bars are indicated on my K3. I said none. My K3 doesn't even indicate that it's registered to me. It just says "My Kindle." instead of "Mike's 2nd Kindle" or whatever. Amazon CS said I have to go to a hotspot and then this will change. They also said I may have to buy a router...whatever that is... I tried downloading via USB from my computer, but that doesn't work either.
I've never been to a hotspot. Never even been to a Starbucks. I lead a very dull life. Thanks for your help, and wish me luck. I hope I make it back alive.

It sounds like you purchased the $139 kindle. Is that correct? I think you may have to connect wirelessly once, then you can use it directly from your computer via USB.

When you get to Starbucks, buy a really good coffee, then turn on the kindle. Press the menu button and select "Turn on Wireless" . Then see what happens.

ETA: If CS is suggesting that you purchase a router, it might be easier to return the WiFi kindle and purchase the WiFi + 3G version for the extra $50, so that you can connect via AT&T's service. k4k Thanks much. I went to my library, got some assistance and managed to download a book to my K3 ($139 version). The upper left corner of the K3 now says "Mike's 2nd Kindle" like it should. I can probably now download stuff from my computer as you suggest. But I think I'm going to return this K3 and buy the $189 version, because I travel a bit and I'm not always near my computer. Also, it snows in Albany....really snows! If my computer goes on the fritz I'd like to get books without trudging through 3 feet of snow to find that my library is closed. I thought that's what Kindle was all about in the first place.
So call off the LT search & rescue effort, and thanks again.

#7 krazy4katz - I haven't bought the solis light yet. I only got my Kindle last week and I've been using an ordinary bedside lamp to read at night (which is fine for me since I sleep alone).
I may still invest in a booklight, but I think i'll try a cheap one I can pick up in a store first. I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment, but I'm nearly broke so not much choice in the matter :). Never mind, the kindle makes being poverty stricken extremely bearable.

Phlox, so sorry that you are broke.

I will probably wait for the m-edge covers to go with the light I already have, but I thought if I ever wanted to read sans cover, I would need a clip-on.

I have a Kandle, and have found it really really good.

You do have to have good batteries though - after a while the light weakens and doesn't illuminate the whole page. They last quite a good while though.

I think it's a really neat design.

#5 - I have been using my Mighty Brite flexible clip-on light since I bought my 1st gen almost 2 years ago. I like that I can move the light if necessary and it is much less expensive.

I bought one of these today, called The Really Tiny Booklight, and I'm amazed at how bright it is -

It's also very, very light and fits the K 3 perfectly, without obscuring any words on the screen. I'm hoping the battery life won't be terrible, but I'll stock up on watch batteries just in case. It was really cheap too, and so far I have to say I just love it.

I bought the amazon kindle cover with built-in light for my Kindle 3rd generation (or latest generation, whatever it's called) and I really like it a lot. It's built into the cover so it's always there.

I have a Kandle for my Kindle; have had it for a while.
I like it however the light tends to lose brightness pretty fast. To get that "brightness" back you need to replace the batteries. That may not be a big deal for some but I live overseas and they don't sell them here so I end up having to order $3.00 batteries off line and pay shipping from them.
My girl-friend has the light that slide into your her cover and she loves it. Haven’t heard her complain once.
I will say this about the Kandle, I have a three year old and she tends to "take" all my books lights, the Kandle has held up and not broke. That's a plus for me!
