- Gladstone's Library is a residential library, founded in 1894 by William Ewart Gladstone, located in the picturesque village of Hawarden, just 10 minutes drive from Chester.
Gladstone's Library has been recognised as the most important research library and collection in Wales after the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth. The Library boasts an outstanding collection of more than 250,000 books, journals and pamphlets on a wide range of subjects but specialising in our core subject areas of Theology and Victorian Studies. This unique collection is kept up-to-date with the latest publications which readers can browse on the open shelves.
The heart of the Library is Gladstone’s own collection of over 32,000 items. Many of his books contain his annotations, some of which are extremely detailed. In addition to his books, the Library houses most of Gladstone’s non-political correspondence, speeches and papers which are administered by the Flintshire Record Office.
The Library also houses a number of special collections including the Bishop Moorman Franciscan Library and the Glynne-Gladstone Manuscripts.
Many of our visitors come to Gladstone's Library to find space and inspiration for their own writing. Over the past ten years, some 150 books have been written or researched wholly or in part at Gladstone's Library - a testimony to the creative and stimulating environment which guests enjoy.
Apart from the Library itself, visitors can enjoy homemade meals in our newly refurbished restaurant , relax in comfortable accommodation, browse our Gladstone Exhibition or reflect in the tranquil atmosphere of our new chapel. What's more, our state-of-the-art meeting rooms and conference facilities can be hired for functions such as business meetings, training courses or seminars.
