Custard the Dragon and the Wicked Knight is a story about a cowardly pet dragon. Belinda, his owner, has three other pets: a cat, a dog, and a mouse. However, the dragon is scared of everything, especially rabbits. Belinda is taken by the wicked knight and the other pets are too sick to save her; this leaves Custard. He gains courage and blows the knight's castle down and then reduces Belinda. He gets home and they all praise him, but they want him to get a rabbit out of their house. Custard is too afraid and says he likes being cowardly, which Belinda is just as pleased with. This story is told in rhyme. I think kids will love it because it is silly. It was a cute book and I enjoyed reading it. There were a few words that were hard to pronounced and some were were italicized to convert emotion, such as whooshed and should. I will definitely have this book in my future classroom. ( ) First time reading a selection from the adventures of "The Tale of Custard the Dragon." I like this book a lot. It was funny and the illustrations were simple but attractive and fit well with the text. I also noticed how the author italicized some words in the text such as, "whooshed" and "should." I believe the author's purpose for italicizing certain words throughout the text was to emphasize emotion and/or action during select times in the story. As far as word choice, the author used some very challenging words; some I couldn't pronounce nor knew their meaning. Words like "edelweiss" and "roguery" just to name a few, are some challenging words for K-6 grade readers. A word bank is highly recommended before reading this book. The message of this book is to overcome your fears. Overall, I think the book is fun and I believe children will love it. This book was so funny! Custard the Dragon is an adorable character. Belinda lives with a kitten, a puppy, a little red wagon, and Custard the Dragon. One day, an evil knight named Sir Garagoyle kidnaps Belinda and it's up to the timid Custard to save her. Ogden Nash has some brilliant end rhymes in this poem. There are usually several couplets on each page and there are pictures on every page. It's a great poem to read to kindergarteners and first graders. Second graders could probably read this book on their own. I would use this poem as a read-aloud book to expose my students to poetry. We could also use this book to discuss strong verbs and how strong verbs make writing more interesting. If you enjoy this book, you will also probably enjoy The Tale of Custard the Dragon by Ogden Nash. In this poem, Belinda lives in the white house with a gray mouse, a kitten, a puppy, red wagon, realio, trulio, and pet dragon. Custard is a dragon's name, and he's shy. Sir Garagoyle is the wicked, wicked knight. He likes to eat screws, nails, rattlesnake tongues, and crocodile tails. He takes Belinda away from these animals. Custard becomes a hero to save Belinda from Garagoyle. Kids become stronger. They can do anything. Don't be scare! Help friends survive from the evil like Garagoyle.
