"On the eighteenth, the Federal forces appeared on the Jackson and Grapevine road, east of the town. The two following days were spent by the blue in making their lines of circumvallation. The grey and the blue lines were about eight hundred yards apart. On the twenty-second, the ironclads came up the river from Grand Gulf. When they opened fire on the town and its defenses, which they did almost immediately, the siege of Vicksburg was formally begun"--from Cease Firing Beginning with the Battle of Vicksburg and concluding at Appomattox, Mary Johnston's Cease Firing picks up where The Long Roll leaves off. Makes you feel like you were in the civil war. Interesting side stories, but need to read the Long Roll first. Book is a bit monotonous. Glad I got through it, ready for a lighter novel. ( )

This book is a historical fiction work, a sequel to The Long Roll (1911). It has wonderful illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. Mary Johnston is a descendent of Confederate general Joseph Johnston, so the book is written from the Southern point of view. The battle descriptions are excellent and there are several subplots involving characters from the first book. This book was very popular in its time and well worth finding at used book stores. Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind, was reticent of publishing her book because this book had been so popular and she thought the topic was exhausted. ( )
