When Meg is sent away to recover from an illness her Grandmother gives her what has become known as the Invalid Doll. But there is more to the doll than meets the eye... The Invalid Doll, Jessie, came over the prairies with Meg's Great-Great-Grandmother more than a hundred years ago, and is a special family heirloom. But what is it about the doll that makes her Grandmother's cat hiss and run from the room? When Meg falls asleep holding the doll she wakes up in another time, where she is a girl called Morag, travelling across the prairie in a covered wagon. As Meg's real life becomes more miserable she uses the doll as a means of escape to Morag's happy family and a life full of adventure. But Meg's dream gradually becomes a nightmare. Will she be trapped forever in the past?… (mehr)

Meg is sick in bed with rheumatic fever and is staying with her grandmother for the duration. Despite her illness she hasn't overlooked the growing distance between her parents and worries they may divorce. Her worries about her parents and her future take a backseat when she discovers her vivid fever dreams of travelling across the prairie with a homesteading family ni the 1880s are real. The connection seems to be from Jessie, a china-head doll known in her family as 'the Invalid Doll' because children were only allowed to hold it as a treat while they were sick.

I had never heard of this book, and seeing the low number of ratings, it seems to have missed a lot of other people as well. It's a solid short chapter book that eaves a lot of heavy elements together seamlessly. Elements of the story may be dated, how many children in the United States and Canada get rheumatic fever these days?, but Meg as a character holds up. The narration also includes her grandmother and parents and gives a sensitive and well-rounded picture of a family in transition. I would say the history is spot-on, minus an anachronisitic phrase or two, which is more than can be said for most historic fiction for this age group.

Jessie the doll is the sole unsettling aspect of the book. The reader can't be sure what its motivation was, if the doll had an active part to play. There is something sinister about it, but it all fades into the background by the end without being settled. Very well done. ( )

One of those rare books you read as a child and do'n't want to give up as an adult. ( )

A very interesting book with a good plot. Meg is very sick, and she gets a strange doll that transports her into the past. ( )
