Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

VBI (Vermont Bureau of Investigation) head Joe Gunther and his team are called in to investigate a series of violent deaths that appear unrelated until telltale clues reveal a linkage between them and that all of the deaths are, in fact, murders. However, apart from a single drop of unexplained blood left at each crime scene, there are no obvious connections between the victims or the cases. In the search for the elusive truth, the VBI must plumb the depths of every suspect's past, every victim's most intimate details, and examine each piece of evidence down to the smallest detail.

Second time through this book; an OK but not great Archer Mayor story.
Sequential revenger killing instigated by mother, carried out by less-loved son.
Joe's new girlfriend, Lynn is murders in an attempt to kill Gayle on the campaign trail. ( )

Joe Gunther and his team at the VBI are faced with the most complex and deadly case of their careers when they are called in to investigate a series of violent deaths that appear unrelated to one another. That is, until telltale clues reveal a linkage between the deaths. Even more chilling, the crime scenes were staged and, despite initial appearances, those deaths are, in fact, murders. And that clue - a single drop of unexplained blood at each crime scene, coming from three additional unknown people - leaves the police with more questions than answers. ( )

The story starts out well, but lost me when it turned to going into way to many details of how the synchrotron works and how it may help with DNA in Joe Gunther's current investigation. Red Herring is my least favorite book in the Joe Gunther series. ( )

My first Joe Gunther novel, of an older experienced detective investigating three deaths that are seemingly unrelated. Blood droppings are traced through a very sophisticated lab to link the cases. Enjoyable read. ( )

In a wonderfully complex novel that holds the reader's attention from the start, three murders occur with little to tie them together.

Joe Gunther and his team find drops of blood that have nothing to do with the victim and there is also no apparent connection between the victim's themselves.

Doreen Frenc, a businesswoman is the first victim but seems an unlikely target because she is so well liked. Then, a school administrator is found hung in a sloppily staged suicide. Finally, a young man is found, apparently drunk with his vehicle run off the road.

The connection that Joe and his team uncover is intelligent and realistic. It is one of those moments when the reader says "ah, ha."

There is also a nice description of the Vermont landscape and characters who are well described and lifelike.

I've enjoyed this series and "Red Herring" is a worthy addition to the Joe Gunther saga. ( )
