A familiar tale, the Three bears, is given a new treatment with many Spanish words used in an English story where children will be able to recognize the words. I received two copies of this delightful book (keeping one to bind and giving one to away).

FROM AMAZON: A unique and humorous retelling of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" that includes Spanish words woven throughout and a fabuloso ending, illustrated by a Caldecott Honor-winning artist.

The Oso family is going out for a stroll, and Rubia has her eye on their empty casita. A nice bowl of sopa, a comfortable chair, a perfecta little bed. Who wouldn't want to open la puerta and come in? Just right for bilingual families, new Spanish speakers, and anyone who likes a bueno twist on a classic.

This funny fairy-tale retelling includes a glossary of Spanish words used in the book. ( )

In this version, Goldilocks is La Rubia, and though she eats the little bear's sopa and breaks his silla and sleeps in his cama, then flees, she returns, repentant, with soup she's made and helps little bear patch up his chair. The text rhymes, and Spanish words are sprinkled throughout with a glossary at the back. I found it a bit jarring the way Spanish nouns would be incorporated into the English text without their complete forms (e.g. sopa instead of la sopa), but it works well enough and introduces kids to another language. This story is a bilingual version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The bears in this story are of Hispanic decent and speak Spanish. The text intermingles mostly English words with some Spanish words in a rhyming fashion that makes this a fun read. The Spanish words are shown in a different color and there is a glossary with phonetics in the back of the book of all the Spanish words used in the story.

The illustrations in this book are wonderful and add a great deal of interest and support to the text of the story. The story line would probably be familiar to many of the students, so this is a nice way to introduce some Spanish into their vocabulary. Spanish speaking students would appreciate the incorporation of their first language into this classic story. This could lead to additional discussions about language and other cultures. And possibly a conversation about fairy tales that are common in Hispanic cultures that can then be read to the class. ( )
