The author claims that Nasution was a ruthless yet humane soldier, who understood the effect of guerrilla warfare on his own society. Nasution advocated a kind of total warfare, including attacks on the enemy’s political supporters and its collaborators. For counter guerrilla, he aimed to fight the guerrillas with their own tactics. Nasution stated however that fighting a guerrilla war influences a society until long after the end of the military conflict, as its soldiers cannot be expected to embrace civil society easily.
As a general thought about the role of violence in Indonesian society, which is “an instrumental value, to be used against a greater evil”.
