Once upon a time--until only half a century ago--children grew up mostly outdoors, in close contact with plants, animals, dirt, & rocks. When they weren't helping with household tasks, they were exploring their surroundings, with other children or alone, in seemingly purposeless activity. This was just what nature ordered, Sara Stein argues. Drawing on her own observations as well as the work of linguists, biologists, anthropologists, & psychologists, she shows us the world through the eyes of developing children, illuminating the features their nature leads them to expect: a place they will explore & come to know intimately; resources that bear on their needs for food, shelter, & manufacture; a chance to develop skills in their play, & a community that will need those skills; & adults who pass along, through explanation & myth, a way to comprehend the relationship between nature & culture. By showing us the landscape of childhood as it was meant to be, Stein helps us to understand how the environment we have supplanted it with has encouraged children to become disappointed & diffident, to grow away from us as they grow up. She also shows us that it is within our grasp to restore a better pathway to adulthood in our own homes & backyards, & she offers dozens of practical suggestions to that end.… (mehr)
