Three Little Pigs

Summary:
When the mother pig suggested the little pigs should move out, the pigs packed and left the house. Each pig built a house, one of straw, one of sticks, and one of bricks. The wolf came to each house, he could blow down the first two houses easily. When the wolf came to the house of brick the wolf was unable to blow the house down. The wolf tried to climb into the chimney but the pigs were able to get rid of him with hot water.

Reaction:
I really enjoyed the story of the Three Little Pigs. I remember the story from when my mother read it to me when I was a child, it was my favorite. The characters of the little pigs are self-reliant, because, they wanted to move out, and be independent. The character of the wolf is a character that is only concerned about himself. I think it teaches that if you work hard, your hard work will pay off.

Extension Ideas:
1. A teacher can use the story to teach the value of working hard.
2. The story can be used to introduce young kids to traditional
literature.
3. The story can teach how to be self-reliant, but not afraid to ask for
help.

Another movie adaptation from Disney's Wonderful World of Reading series. This one breaks with usual tradition by actually naming the author of this adaptation as Barbara Brenner (most of the time with these books the authors names are omitted).

The book follows the 1933, Academy Award-winning, Disney Silly Symphony short, even down to the catchy song:

"Who's afraid of the big bad wolf,
the big bad wolf
the big bad wolf?

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf?
Tra la la la la-a-a-a!"

Barbara Brenner has also added a bit more of a back story, showing the three little pigs living at home prior to being coaxed out of the family home by their mother.

The wolf plots their downfall from the very start with various attempts at using force, (namely a lot of huffing and puffing), as well as cunning; such as dressing up in sheeps clothing. But, misses out disguising himself as a Fuller Brush salesman - as he did in the original cartoon (due to restrictions on product placement in children's books - I expect).

The illustrator put in plenty of good visual gags throughout, if you look closely. Such as the puffer fish design on practical pig's bellows, the pastiche of Whistler's (Pig's) Mother watching a television set, hanging over Practical Pig's bed. And, the wolf (after being defeated by the three pigs) reading a book titled 'How to cook chicken'! ;)

This is one of the better movie adaptations from Disney's Wonderful World of Reading.
Another great short bed-time book. We all liked it; young and old.

As usual with these book club books from Grolier there is no publication date except the original copyright date of 1972, very likely a decade or two earlier! ( )

Summary: Three brother pigs set off to live on their own. Each pig builds their own house from different materials, to hide from the big bad wolf. Only the third little pig's house, made from bricks, is still standing after the wolf tries to blow it down.
Personal reaction: This is one of my favorite stories from my childhood. I can remember learnning how to read it all by myself. This is a fun story to read to your kids because they can help you tell you it.
Class room extensions: This book could be used to discuss what houses are made of around the world. An activity to do with the class would be to make little houses out of different materials such as sticks, clay , mud or rocks.
