For most parents, their child's teenage years are just as bad, if not worse, than the terrible twos. But for Sachiko and Masato Azuma, the situation is further complicated by their son Hikaru's autism. As puberty strikes, Hikaru's growing sexual awareness creates uncomfortable and embarrassing situations, and begins to affect his little sister, Kanon. The already-taxed Sachiko must find ways to alleviate the situation, while being mindful of the effects her approach may have on her children and on the people around them. But when Masato is told he has to relocate again for work, the pressure is really on Sachiko as the decision is made to move in with her mother-in-law, who has always been less-than-accommodating to Hikaru's needs. With new challenges arising daily - Hikaru tackling adolescence through the lens of autism, Kanon struggling with peer pressure, Masato throwing himself into the new job - will Sachiko, the Azuma family's rock, succumb to the cracks that have begun to form in her generally cheerful outlook on life?… (mehr)

As she reached the (premature) end of her efforts, Tobe started use the ongoing manga series of a boy with autism to look at other issues in Japanese society. Hikaru's mother must still deal with him hitting puberty; the entire family has to move to his unsympathetic grandmother's house, which means re-enacting a lot of her earlier hostility to his very presence in her life; but there are also some diversions into her right to to lead her own life without scrutiny from the younger generation, and the question of providing contraception for underage women (the latter feels somewhat pasted in, and was presumably a reaction to something going on in Japan at the time). As always, Tobe's art and prose are nicely observed and convey what it's like to live in a society I don't know with a problem that I do know. ( )

Still loving this heartfelt series. Hikaru is in junior high now and hitting puberty--leading to more, uh, "learning opportunities" for his mother to help him through. His little sister is being teased because her brother is "stupid" or "retarded" and it's taking a toll on her. Then the family moves to their unsupportive grandmother's house, and things really get dicey.

I've heard there's one more volume coming--half of it more of Hikaru's story, and half sketches/workbook-y stuff. Whether that's true or not, I choose to believe that Hikaru goes on to live a happy, productive life, thanks to his mother's patient teachings through the years. Unfortunately, the series author passed away without finishing, so all I can do is assume Hikaru would have grown up well. ( )
