I liked the way the story was told but it missed the rage. The one where people have two choices: to kill everything until they are stopped or to find the thing that makes the rage seems... to be not worth it. For the Sheppard that thing was his faith. It was still there but his faith made it bearable. Made him see beyond that.
Well that was how I saw it. For me this story fell a bit short in telling the Sheppard's story with all the emotions it deserved. ( )

Huh. So just last book, I was lamenting the lack of a backstory for Book, and here we are. It's a series of short stories, working backwards from his death (in Serenity). Finally, we get some answers.

There's not actually anything terribly surprising. We all knew he'd done bad things and turned to religion, but it was still fascinating to read back through the stories and in a backwards sort of way seeing how Sheppard Book came to be.

A wonderful story.

Not to mention, you get scenes like this:

It goes on for a few pages and is so much better even than that. Hard to imagine; I know. Read it and find out! ( )

I can't believe it took me nine years to get my hands on this!!

As a big Firefly fan, for me the most frustrating thing about the show's far-too-short lifespan, was that we never found out anything about Shepherd Book's past.

While it would have been far, far better to have had the late Ron Glass provide us with the answers in another season or four of Firefly, this graphic novel does at least answer some of the questions we'd all been left with. I think it still doesn't quite explain the VIP treatment Book got on the Alliance ship when he was injured, but I guess a fake ID of some sort for just such an occasion wouldn't have been entirely out of character...

The jump-backwards format that Zack Whedon chose to tell this story became more interesting and appropriate with each jump. I think a linear-forwards type tale, starting at childhood, wouldn't have had the same impact, and certainly would have been less interesting. as it was, with each new jump, it left me wondering how he had come to be in that situation, which would lead to an "ah!" moment in the next jump, followed by the next question.

I enjoyed it very much. ( )

This book appears to be the last of the graphic novel tie-ins to the Serenity-verse, and it is one about which I have very mixed feelings. I admit, my feelings were mixed even as I picked it up. Did I want the mystery of the Shepherd's origins revealed? Could the "real story" be as good as the mystery? Now that I've read it, I don't know that it is.

This story is told as flashback after flashback. Starting with the attack on Haven and Book's fatal wound -- tracing choices back through his life, each illuminating paths followed later, ending with his leaving home as a teenager. My feelings are mixed because this is a good story. A good story, but...

Any fan of the series couldn't help but cheer many of the Shepherd's life choices, nor fail to sympathize with many of his circumstances. However, without getting too spoilery, this story does not explain at all to my mind, the central mystery of Shepherd's story: why, when the Firefly crew were about to be turned away by the Alliance, would checking Book's ident card lead them to an about face -- bringing him in for treatment before sending them on their merry way? The story in this book could explain some other mysteries, but to me, it makes the treatment described above even less likely.

So, frustrating. But perhaps worth it for a few scenes of Shepherd practicing his faith. And maybe Jayne calling River a jelly brain, who is not offended while she's doing a single hand-stand. Still. Very mixed. ( )

This book is a must read for any Browncoat or Firefly fan. It beautifully fills in the story of Shepherd Book. Joss and Zack did a great job giving us the mysterious history of our favorite Shepherd! ( )
