This book is absolutely adorable.
Elizabeth, a little brown bear, loves helping her father raising and lowering their flag every day -- she is his 'Flag Keeper'. When he is due to go on a trip for 3 days, Elizabeth asks is she can raise and lower the flag herself in his absence. He says she should wait for him to return. Wanting to prove to her father that she is capable of raising the flag on her own, Elizabeth attempts to do so, and things go slightly wrong. After a couple of attempts, she is overjoyed when she manages to raise the flag correctly on her own.
This book is fun to read, and the illustrations are delightful. I'm sure children will love the characters. The book is also educational as it teaches how and when a flag should be raised and lowered, as well as many other aspects of flag etiquette. This would make a great gift for a young child, and it's a great educational tool for older children, teaching them all about the American flag.
There's an interesting list at the end of the book of dos and don'ts with regard to the flag. The author has also added discussion questions at the end of the book, and activity suggestions. ( )

I really enjoyed this book! This is a great addition to any child's or teacher's library. It is told in a very straightforward way, yet is still easy to understand. It made me realize that it is easy to call oneself, "Patriotic" but yet another thing to commit to putting up a flag every day. Additionally, it has increased my awareness of flag use...I pass many schools and government buildings during my travels and not all of them have the flag up.

Thanks for a timely book!

Flag Keeper was a cute tale of patriotism and good etiquette! I enjoyed it and wished kids would love our country like that in real life.

Elizabeth is a flag keeper for her dad. Every day they take on the responsibility to raise and lower the flag. One day her day goes on a trip for three days and the flag was supposed to take a break. Elizabeth really wants to see her flag flying and after a few mishaps she finally manages it. She longs to learn more about flag etiquette and goes to the library.

What a cute story! It's a bear family so very suitable for younger kids to get into the story but enough content that older readers will have their curiosity stimulated and want to read the whole story. The point as I see it is to teach proper flag etiquette to the young and this book delivers. A very easy to read format, a few long words that are very well explained will not only entertain but teach kids of all ages. I really enjoyed reading it with the girls and they asked a lot of questions. I was very happy that the Flag Facts were included in the back of the book along with the discussion questions to make sure your child understood the story.

I'd have to say go out and get this book if you have children (you can get it from amazon). I think it's very important to teach these concepts and I give this book a TEN (if you've been following my blog I only do 7 out of 7 thumbs up so a ten is very good indeed).

I was given a copy of this book for review by the author. No other compensation was given in return for a good review. ( )
