Operation Archery, the raid on Vaagso and Maaloy in Norway on December 27, 1942, was the first true combined operation carried out by British forces involving the Army, Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force. The Islands of Vaagso and Maaloy on the Norwegian coast between Bergen and Trondheim were selected because they offered a perfect opportunity to damage German installations and morale. Mountbatten, the new head of Combined Operations, hoped to eliminate the local garrison, destroy the fish oil factories and sink enemy shipping. The raiding force consisted of No. 3 Commando, two troops of No. 2 Commando, a medical detachment from No. 4 Commando and a Royal Norwegian Army detachment totalling 51 officers and 525 men. To support the amphibious raid was a flotilla of warships and low-level bomb attacks by the RAF. The raid was launched on Christmas Day 1942, taking the German defenders entirely by surprise. German resistance was stiff, however, and a fierce firefight ensued. Relive the nail-biting action of one of the great raids of World War II in this exciting book, packed with maps and photographs. This booklet was very good. It was quite an enjoyable short read.
This is one of the Osprey Raid series. It is about a raid by the British Commandos, against the Germans, in Norway, during World War II. It occurs very early in the war. It is a combined operation code named 'Archery' and it takes place on December 27, 1941. It occurs on the small island of Vaagso. 'Anklet' was a slightly related naval operation further up the Norwegian coast. As with all Raid booklets, it is profusely illustrated with very good maps. There is no Glossary.
On the positive side: The insert on page 25 for the 'Forces taking part ...' is very good.
On the negative side: There should be a Glossary, and it could contain related operation code names, among other items. What actually (but briefly) is a commando unit? What is a sapper? Every place mentioned should be able to be located on a map. It doesn't have to actually be on a map (but that is best), but it must be able to be clearly located: 5 miles north of ..., next to ..., between ... and ...., etc. The artwork of the 'Private' was good, but more is needed (i.e., Bren gun, etal.). Be consistent: the map on page 37 has blue for the British and red for the Germans, while pages 56-57 have red for the British and blue for the Germans.
I now know that a 'sassenach' is a Scottish lowlander who hates bagpipe music. But, don't ask me how to 'winkle out'. ( )
