"As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate's connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe-especially those closest to Kate. As Roland's long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she'll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear"--… (mehr)

~ 5 Magic Breaks Stars ~

(NO SPOILERS)

Kate Daniels is by far my favorite urban fantasy series and I wait for each new volume with such anticipation. By the time I finish any book in the Kate Daniels series I want to start the series all over again.

I knew from the first sentences I was going to love this book. The writing is FANTASTIC pulling the reader into the world and characters. I love reading and watching the characters grow, interact, and the world building is AMAZING. I have been waiting since the begging of the series for the meeting between Kate and her father. Each novel has prepared us little by little for the big day and I was SURPRISED by the turn of events and yet I’m curious to see what the next few novels will present us. I have to say I enjoyed the rendition of who is who at the begging of the book, before we even start the story, we get a little re-cap of the characters we have come to know and love. The journal entry by Barabas was fantastic. As the store progresses we get more things reveled, more danger, loads of action, tension and humor. It was sad to see Curran gone from most of the book, but it was great watching Kate stand on her own. When he does come home we get one hot sexy love scene that made me want to say bye bye Kate I’m taking your man. As for our secondary characters we get to meet a few new ones and revisit with old ones. The hardest part for me as a reader/fan of these books is when one dies off, whether they are a long time character or one we just meet in the book, it is always emotional to see them go. The writing duo-team does a fantastic job getting us hooked on all the characters that when one goes, I feel for everyone who lost their friend, partner, lover, mate ect… As endings go I was rendered speechless. I did not see that twist of events coming.

So yes I am waiting with great anticipation to see what happens next. Never have I read a series that is more about the journey than the actual destination. Urban Fantasy does not get any better then Kate Daniels and I highly recommend picking this series up.

Audio Jan. 2018: The audio is fabulous. It grabs you. For Magic Breaks the first chapter in the audio is the Character List. It's a rundown of who is who, what they are, and what they can do. The second chapter is a short story From The Journal of Barabas Gilliam. Then we have the main story. At the very end of the audio we are treated to another short story/novella called Magic Test featuring Julie looking for a missing student at a school she might attend.

Magic Breaks is the seventh book in the Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews. This book is a turning point for the series as the one event the previous six books has been building up to finally happens: Roland arrives. Yes, there is a mystery to solve, heart pounding action and some Pack/People politics to deal with. All of it is overshadowed by the knowledge the Roland is coming and Kate will do everything in her power to keep those she loves alive.

While the mystery and political side of things was interesting, it's Kate's internal struggle where the heart of this story is. The wait was worth it. Finally seeing Kate embrace her heritage and truly know what it means to be Roland's daughter was glorious. I also enjoyed getting to know Ghastek better as well as some different Pack members though I missed some of my favorite characters who weren't involved in events.

That ending was quite a surprise. With only three books to go I can't wait to see what the implications mean for the Pack and Atlanta. And I need more Roland please. Is it bad that I like the guy? Overall this was a satisfying read. ( )

Well now, that was *very* satisfying. ( )

I just can't get enough of these books. I love Curran and Kate. They are both powerful on their own, but put them together and they are truly unstoppable. ( )

"Magic Breaks" takes place a very recently after the events in "Magic Rises". We still have Kate dealing with the events that happened in the preceding book. In this new book Curran is called away and Kate is left in charge of the Pack.

Being called to meet with the Conclave Kate is told that a member of the Pack murdered one of the People. If Kate does not find the murderer then the People will declare open war on the Pack.

I am sitting here reeling of the sheer awesomeness that was this book. I can't even get words out right now it was so good. After the last book in the Kate Daniel series, "Magic Rises" I was worried that Ilona Andrews had maybe hit a slump. With trepidation I started this novel this morning at around 3 a.m. and except for a break here or there just read the whole thing in one day. The plot never lets up, twists are thrown in, and the ending totally shocked me.

Ilona Andrews added a very nice character list at the beginning of the book which was greatly appreciated. I honestly remembered all of the characters she mentions but it was nice to see a refresher. Also the novel starts off with Barabas (the Pack lawyer) diary which was a nice touch. We are always in Kate's head while reading so it was nice to start off with Barabas's perspective on events to date.

I am also very glad that Ilona Andrews acknowledges the events in the last book, such as Aunt B's death and how that still haunts Kate. We still have Pack politics aplenty and a better explanation from a new character about why Kate will never be totally accepted by the Pack. We also have back the Kate and Curran that we know and love and no more manufactured drama that is out of character for our two heroes.

Finally, and most importantly to me, unlike with the last book I felt as if we as readers were provided more detail and we actually get to hear more about Kate's family on both her mother and father's side. The pacing in the last book felt off to me and the ending was rushed in my opinion. This book in contrast keeps up an unrelenting pressure on you as you read (why I couldn't put it down) and the pacing was absolutely perfect.

Ilona Andrews is able to tie together so many religious and other races myths into a really cohesive book.

There was also some humor dabbled throughout the book which at times cracked me up. It was so insane to me to go from freaking out that something was going to happen to one of the characters I have grown to love (Derek girl here by the way) to laughing at something that Kate thought in her head or said outside. There were also some lovely quite moments with fan favorite characters like Doolittle that made me happy to see.

There is also a really cool short story included in this book "Magic Tests" that concerns Julie that I really enjoyed.

I don't know how I am going to wait for the next book to come out. ( )
