Fantasy. Fiction. Horror. Literature. There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it's unwise to walk. Sunshine knew that. But there hadn't been any trouble out at the lake for years, and she needed a place to be alone for a while. Unfortunately, she wasn't alone. She never heard them coming. Of course you don't, when they're vampires. They took her clothes and sneakers. They dressed her in a long red gown. And they shackled her to the wall of an abandoned mansion-within easy reach of a figure stirring in the moonlight. She knows that he is a vampire. She knows that she's to be his dinner and that when he is finished with her, she will be dead. Yet, as dawn breaks, she finds that he has not attempted to harm her. And now it is he who needs her to help him survive the day.… (mehr)

Atem der Nacht: Roman von Robin McKinley

The Silver Kiss von Annette Curtis Klause (allisongryski)
allisongryski: Recommended if you're looking for another well-written vampire story, with complex and interesting characters.
  2. 21
    Moonshine von Alaya Johnson (electronicmemory)
electronicmemory: Two books which both involve alternate histories where vampire and supernatural creatures have become everyday occurrences - and dangers - and how two women deal with the sudden appearance of a troubled supernatural creature in their lives. Both feature memorable protagonists, as well as fascinating alternate histories of the United States.… (mehr)

    Sunbolt von Intisar Khanani (Fiamme)
Fiamme: Similar themes of unlikely alliances between human and non human.

  5. 11
    Gargoyle von Andrew Davidson (leahsimone)

Stadt der Finsternis 01: Die Nacht der Magie von Ilona Andrews (leahsimone)
  8. 12
Angelfall: Roman (Heyne fliegt) von Susan Ee (Anonymer Nutzer)
Anonymer Nutzer: Both feature a plucky teenage heroine and an atypical love interest. Neither involves sappy eyeroll-inducing romantic dialogue. As I read Angelfall, I was immediately reminded of Sunshine, however Angelfall is a much better book. If you liked Sunshine, you might like Angelfall. I personally hated Sunshine, but enjoyed Angelfall.… (mehr)

Gespräch mit einem Vampir von Anne Rice (Anonymer Nutzer)
  10. 58
Dead in Dixie von Charlaine Harris (overtheseatoskye)
overtheseatoskye: McKinley's sensible heroine Sunshine, grounded as she is in the daily realities of baking and feeding people, reminds me very much of Sookie Stackhouse of Charlaine Harris' wonderful Southern Vampire series. Somehow the contrast between an earthy, pragmatic heroine and the otherworldly vampire love interest heightens the dramatic tension (and the hawtness).… (mehr)

Undead and Unwed von MaryJanice Davidson (overtheseatoskye)
overtheseatoskye: If you felt a little let down by the coy ending of "Sunshine," pick up this fun, chick-lit-inflected vampire romp - the final scene, gratifyingly, doesn't leave things to your imagination.

This is the story of a 25-year-old cinnamon roll baker named Sunshine, a seemingly normal girl who gets abducted by vampires, survives, and discovers she's not exactly normal after all. Her world is similar to the real world--only it includes demons, werewolfs, sorcerers, vampires, and a government department whose responsbility it is to protect regular humans from these Others. It's clear that the fight between people and non-people is ugly and not going well. What's not clear is Sunshine's role in this struggle.

Sunshine narrates with a sometimes enjoyable, sometimes super annoying blend of attitude, sarcasm, weird slang, and very loooooong digressions into various topics, e.g. the history and social mores of her world, her hopes and fears, her endless analysis of the possible meanings of the events in the book.

And that's really my problem with this book. Too much analysis of the events and not enough event-happening. I thought it was going to be a fun, fast read. It was fast because I eventually started skipping over Sunshine's rambling soliloquies, but it wasn't very fun. I'll give the author credit for very detailed, believable world-creation, but I just didn't have a good time reading it. I was glad when it was over.

Also, I don't really see how this is a Twilight read-alike except for the obvious vampire tie-in. Twilight is all plot and romance. This has just a smidge of romance and it takes a long time to get where it's going. ( )

My friend Justin tried to get me into Robin McKinley probably about 15, 20 years ago. I didn't mean to dismiss his recommendation, I remember something checked out of the library needing to go back before I'd gotten to it, and then I was off, reading other things for twenty years. Now I've circled back, better late than never. You were right, Justin, I do love her! ( )

I always find it a little interesting which books grab the public eye and explode and which do not. This book was fantastic. Far better than any of the Sookie books. Yet Harris' series has exploded into the bestseller list. If you like vampires than do not skip reading this book. ( )

Plot:
Years after the Voodoo Wars that left the world riddled with Bad Spots, vampires, werewolves and demons, Rae, also called Sunshine, works at her family’s bakery and divides her time mostly between the kitchen there and the apartment she rents from Miss Yolande. Sometimes she even spends time with her boyfriend Mel. When she decides to get some alone-time at her family’s cottage next to the lake, Rae is taken prisoner by vampires and locked into a house with one – who also seems to be a prisoner. That vampire, Constantine, desperately tries to stay away from Rae but hunger might get the better of him. Rae and Constantine have to figure out whether they can work together and what that could mean for both of them.

Sunshine is one of those books that has been sitting on my shelf for many years, probably decades, waiting to be read. And I’m afraid that the best time to read it, for me, has passed by now. I struggled a bit with it, especially regarding the information management.

This lives on in my head rent free. It's been decades since I read it, and I can still feel each and every word. ( )

1.5 out of 5 stars. Okay ... I LOVED the plot, the main characters, and the world that the author created!! All very good and just for that I would recommend it for all to read too! However, the reason I have given this book such a low score was because the narrator (Sunshine) rambled like there was no tomorrow! I could have screamed sometimes with how it went from the present situation she would be in, then the next minute she would be talking about things that really had nothing to do with what was going on at the time, and some didn't even make since with the plot. In truth I'm surprised I even finished the book, especially since I liked the book (for the most part) when I was reading it, but as soon as I put it down I had to convince myself to pick it back up again .... since I did want to find out how the book would turn out and end. Also, even though I liked the ending, there was too many loose strings so it felt a little incomplete. *shrug* But that may be just me.

The best vampire story ever. Hands down. The best.
