An unbiased and up-to-date look at prostate cancer treatments and therapies, resolving the problem of contradictory and incomplete information. Dr. Chodak outlines the pros and cons of all reasonable treatment options, recognizing that men and their families need more than just the facts; they are concerned not only with their survival but also what life will be like after treatment. This book offers empathetic insight into the impact of the disease on day-to-day activities so that patients and family members have a clear understanding of what lies ahead and options that are available should complications arise. The book does not gloss over the controversies but presents them in a clear, concise, and easy-to-understand manner.… (mehr)

I would suggest that every man in this country get this book. I have a family history of cancer and so I investigate all types and this book was eye-opening. I have talked with my husband and his family along with the men in my family about this cancer. It is devastating to get the diagnosis that you have cancer, but this book gives you the information you need to make reasonable decisions on how to proceed with the treatment. I again would suggest any man to read this and his loved ones also so they know what to expect. ( )

By curious happenstance, I received this book at a time just prior to the doctor's suggestion that my husband should have a prostate biopsy. Neither of us expected any unwanted news, but the book still promised to be interesting in that neither of us were very well versed on the subject of prostate cancer at all. As it turns out, this book was indespensible in the decisions that became necessary with the result of my husband's biopsy. This book explains so much, and so thoroughly (sometimes to the point of repetition), that by the time the diagnosis of prostate cancer was given to us, we had a clear roadmap of questions to ask. The book doesn't tell you the course of treatment to choose; no book can do that. What it does do is explain what the experts know about prostate cancer, the varying courses of treatments, possible side effects, and probable outcomes. It also explains that each case is individual, and each person will react to a given treatment differently. This is such an informative book, and I really recommend it for all men and for the spouses and families of those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. ( )

Every man should be required to have this book, as it is said that if a man lives long enough, he will contract prostate cancer. The book is extremely helpful - Dr. Chodak provides the reader with explanations of the various forms of the disease, the treatments available, and the current state of knowledge as to how effective the treatments are.

Perhaps most frustrating is the amount of repetitiveness in the book. In his effort to organize the material effectively, and to provide the material in a comprehensive fashion, nearly every chapter contains much material that has already been explained, or that will be explained (again) later - or both. The result is that after you've read half the book you feel like you're just re-reading the book point by point.

What is also frustrating - but not because of Dr. Chodak - is the lack of research that has been done in a way that would provide some sort of definitive data about the disease. Dr. Chodak is careful to note when the studies that have been done are helpful in making decisions, and when the studies are not helpful at all.

For all of its faults, the book is, nevertheless, invaluable. No man should be without this book. ( )

Winning the Battle Against Prostate Cancer, this is the second edition to give further information for those who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer whereas the first edition didn't. The introduction gives helpful insight about the purpose of the book, to be well-informed about the treatments offered, risks taken, and this is one cancer where most doctors do not know how to manage it. Therefore, once you are adequately informed, one will know the right questions to ask and not rush into any treatment advised by doctors, maybe even get a second opinion if necessary. My greatest interest was to find out further information on what treatments are available, to know the signs, since my grandfather died from this type of cancer which isn't well discussed or talked about even with family members. However, his brothers and sisters also died from other types of cancers which was a little bit more discussed than prostate cancer.

Gerald Chodak, M.D. shares a summary of different stages of the cancer and which tests are recommended to see where the cancer has developed, or can be diagnosed effectively especially after false-negative/false-positive results. He is also highly educated and experienced as a clinician and educator, including a leading expert on prostate cancer. He also offers prostate educational videos on his website.

A very beneficial tip when seeking a professional surgeon, not to rely on pamphlets or guides with top surgeons listed since this is only based on popularity and not necessarily the best surgeons in the field itself. Additionally, my favorite chapter of the book was on complementary and alternative medicine. These herbs and other suggestions can be used for anyone aside from those with cancer. I love healthy and effective remedies!

I believe this book was written for medical patients who have prostate cancer, and to help families who has a family member who may be diagnosed with it to get a better understanding of medical procedures, symptoms, treatments, and possibly ways to cure it. However, it was difficult to clearly comprehend all the medical terminology, studies and research as an avid reader. I wanted to learn more since my grandfather had prostate cancer that we thought was cured years prior with the right treatment and surgical procedures but in 2004, the cancer later progressed, spreading throughout his body and died.

I received a copy from the publisher to provide a review after being randomly selected on Early Reviewers program on LibraryThing.
