riverwillow: Both 'Neverwhere' and 'Rivers of London' (US title 'Midnight Riot') evoke a magical fairy tale London which sometimes feels more authentic then any real life guide to the city.

souloftherose: It's difficult to explain this recommendation without giving spoilers to one or other of the books. There were certain plot elements to Rivers of London/Midnight Riots which made me think of The Big Over Easy. And both books have a well-developed sense of humour.… (mehr)
fhprice: Besides the urban setting and police procedural genre similarities, both have protagonists with a snarky "we're just cogs making witty observations about the machine" voices. Wicked humor.
andreas.wpv: Different type of protagonist and friends, but dealing with the un- or supernatural, solving crimes and preventing disasters.
This is very similar though in style and tone, mood of the story. It is tense, yes, but holds no horror or exceeding brutality. The protagonist is human, and like a human, and the story has an undercurrent of kindness that many novels miss. And it is funny at times, from gentle humor to laugh out loud.… (mehr)

I stumbled across this book in twitter maybe a few months ago. Then I found it in a second-hand store and bought it, and to my surprise it's already ten years old!
It is urban fantasy set in London. I don't like London, I don't like british english - and this book has both in abundance. So many confusing and irrelevant place names, as well as british weird shit.
Also the author's building up a series, it's noticeable in the somewhat jumpy scenes that try to introduce many, maybe too many characters and urban fantasy elements.
It still works quite well and it's an easy read, the action and the pacing are very good. ( )
Spannende Urban Fantasy! Very British, mit einem großartigen, trockenen Humor vor dem Hintergrund der Londoner Polizei. Der Protagonist ist dynamisch, grundsympathisch und die junge Version eines zerstreuten Professors. Die Handlung ist spannend, skurril, kurzweilig und bis zur letzten Seite packend. Beste Unterhaltung! ( )
Unterhaltsam, kurzweilig, gut für eine lange Zugfahrt oder ein-zwei Tage im Liegestuhl auf der Terasse.
Eine schnoddrig-britische Variante des Settings "junger Nachwuchscop kommt in die 'besondere/übernatürliche' Abteilung der Polizei und stellt fest, dass die normale Welt gar nicht so normal ist." Der Autor selbst ist up to date mit bekannten Fantasy-/Scifi Autoren und Filmen, streut immer wieder Zitate oder Bezüge auf sie ein und baut über die Buchreihe hinweg eine durchaus interessante Version einer Welt auf, in der "absurder Scheiß" genauso der Polizei obliegt, wie stinknormaler Mord und Totschlag, und Isaac Newton der Begründer der modernen, ernsthaften Magie war.
Nicht herausragend, aber unterhaltsam und für zwischendurch genau das Richtige. ( )
Die beiden Handlungsstränge sind etwas zusammenhanglos, stellenweise zieht es sich, insgesamt noch steigerungsfähig, aber auch nicht schlecht. Die Stelle im Theater ist schon sehr spannend. ( )
Durch ein wirklich ansprechendes Cover bin ich auf dieses Buch gestoßen... muss aber sagen, dass dieses mehr verspricht, als das Buch dann halten kann. Nichts desto Trotz ein netter Fantasy-Krimi mitten in der Geisterwelt Londons. Der Anfang ist wirklich witzig und rasant geschrieben, aber der Autor konnte sowohl das Tempo als auch den Stil nicht ganz bis zum Schluss durchziehen, weshalb es im zweiten Drittel etwas "zäh" wird! Trotzdem finde ich nicht, dass die Zeit dafür verloren gewesen wäre: ( )
