The characters completely drove this story for me, otherwise I would have given up. The story was very slow, and even by the end never seemed to arrive anywhere. The long drawn on diatribes on the legal process of "The Turn-Around Plan" had me wishing I was reading the book, rather than listening on audio, so that I could skim past it all. (I had the same issue with listening to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo; maybe I just can listen to long boring bits about finance). The tag line called this a "legal thriller" is was neither in my opinion. This is the first of a trilogy and it felt like this book could not stand on it's own and really is going to need the rest of the series to get somewhere. I just don't know that this first installment peaked my interest enough to care to find out anymore. This read is about a wealthy man in trouble with his business and wife. One man can ease his trouble if he agrees to three things. One of those things is one day in the future, he will need Preston to do something for him and he must do it without questions and he must complete it. Preston agrees, he is desperate and worried. In the end Preston finds out who he really is and was all along. At first I was a bit put off with so much description being on the business side. I have no idea what a SOT is or what the implications are and yet, I really didn’t want to learn either. This story is so much more than a business in trouble. It is about realizing who you are as a person; it is about not just looking at others but really caring about knowing others. A long journey into one’s past and watching it change the future you one time desired. Wonderful rich characters all unique in their own right and ones whom I wish weren’t fiction. No magic cure was found, and I so wanted there to be. It was fitting I suppose but there was a time that I put the book down as the tears started falling. The very end page amazed me and tickled me with laughter. Only Joe, the Joe from this book could make one cry and laugh too. A very special read. This book was purchased through Amazon.com Amazon offered this title for $.99, and I'm glad I didn't pay more! I can't believe that this book won a first book award AND was so highly touted by the readers of librarything. To me the adage: If it's too good to be true; it probably is applies to Joe Hart, pun intended! SNORE! There was absolutely nothing to make the reader think beyond what was written on the pages AND nothing to make the reader think after the pages were read. keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen

In his award-winning debut novel, James J. Kaufman delivers a gripping and unforgettable story of two strong men from separate worlds-one touched by tragedy, the other by greed-brought together with unexpected results. In chronicling how their lives and those they touch are dramatically changed by their encounter, Kaufman reveals the power of relationships, the nature of love, and ultimately the meaning of life."Do what the other fella can't. Be what the other fella ain't. And then help the other fella." Joe Hart has never let go of his uncle's words. An orphan from the unspoiled Adirondack mountains, Joe leaves his humble beginnings and goes on to distinguish himself, first as a navy submarine commander, then as an attorney unequaled in his field. But Joe's world crashes with an unexpected tragedy. A child of wealth and privilege from New York's Upper East Side, Preston Wilson harbors a fear of financial failure. When that fear threatens to become reality, Preston tracks down the one attorney who might be able to save him. Joe reluctantly decides to help-but only after extracting a promise that Preston will fulfill an unspecified condition when called upon. Preston, desperate, agrees. Too soon, Joe calls in his unconventional IOU. The self-absorbed Preston balks when Joe tells him he must meet, earn the trust of, and care for several people. Each of Joe's collectibles-none of whom Preston would ever want to know-has a serious personal challenge. Can Preston find the integrity to make good on his promise to Joe? Does he have a choice? I chose to read the book partly because of all the 5-star reviews, but I think my fellow readers misled me this time. I don’t recommend the book.
