I liked this one a lot. It has one story arc with a climactic battle in the end. I liked the art surrounding the panels, especially Red Riding Hoods stuff. ( )

Things are unsettled in Fabletown: Snow White is visibly pregnant, trying to avoid publicizing the father's identity, Prince Charming is sowing dissent among the Fables characters to replace King Cole as Mayor, who is consolidating the wealth of the recently deceased Bluebeard into Fabletown's Treasury, and the first refugee from the Homelands (the dominion of the Adversary), Red Riding Hood, shows up in Fabletown, to be feted as a celebrity. Separated from her true love, Boy Blue, in an earlier story arc, there is great tension as he is desperate to rekindle their relationship. Sherriff Bigby, on the other hand, is suspicious about the circumstances of her escape and leaves to investigate, seriously weakening Fabletown's defenses against the March of the Wooden Soldiers.

Note: Like others, I am also bothered by the ever changing illustrators' representations of the main characters in this series. ( )

Another reread for me.

My previous review of this installment can be found in [b:March of the Wooden Soldiers|21325|Fables, Vol. 4 March of the Wooden Soldiers|Bill Willingham|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327870401s/21325.jpg|1330999].

Reading the collected edition, it includes "Cinderella Libertine" which I hadn't read before. I have to say the bit with the pumpkin at the end was surprising and incredibly disgusting. Nice touch with the Napoleon statue, as well... Man, I love this series.

"March of the Wooden Soldiers" is right up there with "Storybook Love." It's from the former that the famous (well, geekily famous) statue of Snow White and Bigby comes from. One of these days I'll probably get one of those for myself, I love them so.

The story picks up, more questions are raised than answers, and the pace is just.. perfect. I really want to find the next installments and get more up to date on Fables. This series is just perfect.

Where else do you get to see Mr. Toad riding the cow that jumped over the moon whilst lobbing grenades at wooden soldiers? I mean, come on... ( )

The Vertigo Comics series, Fables, just gets better as it goes along. The premise: the legendary characters we know from fairy tales are real and live in exile in NYC. Those that can pass for human, that is. The rest (talking animals, giants, Lilliputians, etc.) live on a farm in upstate New York, far from the prying eyes of the 'mundy' community. The fables, as they are known, fled to our magic-deprived world to avoid enslavement or death at the hands of 'The Adversary', an unstoppable enemy who conquered their homelands.

The genius of the series is how the characters are portrayed. Pinocchio is an angry young man, trapped forever in the body of a boy (apparently he wasn't specific enough in his wish to the Blue Fairy). Prince Charming is a womanizer and a cad with three ex-wives: Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. Little Boy Blue has a tragic past. And Jack encompasses all the Jacks (giant killer, beanstalk boy and Horner). The stars of the series are Snow White, who is in charge of running Fabletown in NYC, and Bigby Wolf, its acting sheriff.

This third deluxe collection contains one standalone story, "Cinderella Libertine", and the long story arc, "March of the Wooden Soldiers", in which the Adversary launches an attack on their community in exile. The deluxe editions are nicely put together hardback editions on glossy paper. The cover art from the dustcover is replicated on the actual hardback cover, which is nice (comic hardbacks usually have blank cloth covers).
