The national treasure hunt, Antiques Roadshow is, in its third season, the most popular show on PBS. Every week it draws millions and millions of viewers to the edge of their seats as independent dealers and specialists from the country's leading auction houses appraise family heirlooms and flea market finds alike. Now this knowledge, authority, and passion is distilled in the Antiques Roadshow Primer, an introductory guide to American Antiques and collectibles. Antiques Roadshow has taught us to look for fortunes in our attics--perhaps to find, as other lucky souls have, an Anna Poole Peale portrait miniature worth $5,000 to $7,000 or a Confederate sword worth $35,000. Focusing on 11 major areas--including Furniture, Painting, Silver, Jewelry, Porcelain, and Toys--the primer addresses the essential things buyers and collectors need to know, covering vital details for each category, such as shapes, styles, and patterns, provenance, periods, and motifs. A 32-page full-color section amplifies each chapter by illustrating numerous examples of styles and techniques, and individual items are fully identified, often with their appraised value. Above all, it helps even first-timers to answer the two key question every collector must face: Is it old? Is it valuable?… (mehr)

Received as a host gift from a person we had not been introduced to but was accompanying a couple we knew well. I guessed when he asked what would make a good host gift, they had mentioned we were collectors of a wide variety of antiques if that helped him any. When they heard that the facility was to be this timely guide, instead of warning him off, they wanted to see our facial expressions when he would force us to unwrap it. As it was later relayed to me, I just stared at it, trying to figure out exactly what I was holding (it does have a busy cover, instead). I admit, I caved; when I figured out it was a guide, I immediately thanked him for such a thoughtful gesture, and I had heard about the show. Now, I can read up before I watch my first episode. I handed off the book and told him we needed to get him a drink.

I never read it, but he still received a Thank You card within three days. ( )

Great photos, and once-over-lightly on many of the main divisions of antiques: furniture, paintings, glass, ceramics, books, toys, jewelry, etc. Not much depth, and nothing on values, but as I said, great photos. ( )

OK, this is decent at explaining different eras and styles, but pretty lightweight. It basically skims each topic, but doesn't go into depth on anything. I wasn't too impressed, although I still have the book. It has nice photographs! ( )
