When Timothy Shutt discusses the philosophy of play in general or baseball in particular, or the history of baseball and the fields on which it's played or the contributions and attributes of individual players he's fascinating. But he says baseball is particularly amenable to statistical analysis, and I found all the statistics pretty snooze inducing. ( )
