A girl named Madlenka has her first loose tooth. She goes around her diverse NYC neighborhood to tell everyone. This book would be great for showing diversity in cultures and teaching words in other languages.

Teaching Connections: social skills - differences, visualizing, making connections, making inferences, summarizing, making predictions, asking questions ( )

I loved this amazingly adorable, heartwarming book! The perspective drawings of little Madlenka looking up at the big buildings, the remembrance of what it was like to have a wiggling tooth, the creative cut-out openings in pages that draw the reader's eye to a new angle of Madlenka, and the incorporation of multiple ethnicities within Madlenka's New York City block yield a story full of the excitement of newness and joy of life.

Curricular connections: The pages of the book that tell of the countries, foods, and symbols of her neighbors who are from France, India, Italy, Latin America, Africa, and Asia have multiple images that young children could study. ( )

Madlenka is an amazing and very interesting trade book. Madlenka lives in New York City. She has lived on the same block, in the same apartment building since she's been born. But her block is a unique and special one though because it's like being around the world. Her neighbors are all her friends: the French baker, the Italian ice-cream man, the Indian news vendor, the German lady who sits by her window, the Asian shopkeeper, and the Latin American greengrocer. Just a trip around her block is like taking a trip around the world. The illustrations in Madlenka is amazing and phenomenal. This book has the most creative and fascinating drawing ever because they're like upside and all over the place. Some pages have just black and white drawing with a little color here and there. But overall it is filled with lots of colors and detailed drawings. You can clearly see the characters and how big Madlenka imagination is. The text is basically all over the book. It's in big or small letters that you can read perfectly fine. Teachers can use this book in multiple ways such as incorporating cultures into books, learning about friendship, and that everyone is unique and different. It's a great book to teach about learning of others cultures and background history. I loved and adore this book because it was all over the place and Madlenka had such a big imagination to begin with. She comes open minded and always willing to accept everything and anyone. ( )
