Amazing read. Gives a good view into the search engineering mammoth. Success of Google is because of the audacious vision of Larry and Sergey, combined with their extreme discipline in execution. Interesting to see that they have a Googley approach in every single thing they do. A must read for anyone interested in Google's products and engineering. ( )
As a Google employee, I mainly enjoyed this book from a "I remember that!" perspective, usually happy, sometimes cringing. Even though I didn't gain any deep insights from the book, it was interesting to see how Google's history was perceived from an external perspective. The main downside of this book is one that it can't help -- it's now going on 7 years old which is a significant portion of the company's lifetime. ( )

He was given an unprecedented level of access to the inner workings of Google and enough security latitude to roam around the Googleplex gathering material for this book, and it shows. A narrative of Levy's experience exploring one of the most innovative companies in Silicon Valley, as well as a history of search, data mining, and algorithmic complexity, the author takes the reader from the humble beginnings of a startup founded by two Stanford University students in a garage to the lofty heights of world dominance.
