Each of these short stories are a joy to read. They are witty, insightful and usually leave you guessing as to how each will end. O. Henry‘s utilization of the English vocabulary was a pleasant respite from the banal conversation we are subjected to on a daily basis. An absolute treasure. ( )

Charming. Master of the twist ending. I liked his shorter (1 1/2- 2 pages) stories the best. ( )

This book was on the shelf, and I hadn't read it - I somehow thought I already had. Well, I was familiar with a few of stories: The Last Leaf, The Gift of the Magi, The Man Higher Up, and The Ransom of Red Chief. This last one, for some reason, is not included in this anthology.

As others have noted, O. Henry (William Sidney Porter) is a fine author. Those are stories that can be enjoyed even when they've been read before and you know the ending twist. His descriptive powers are amazing and I really enjoy his wordplay - a combination of puns and the conversation of certain characters who somehow manage to use the wrong word on a regular basis.

I was not so fond of the notes. I generally read all the notes, unless I discover in a scholarly work that the notes are merely references to sources of factual data. This book provided a double helping of notes: end notes that give background explanations and foot notes that explain certain words or phrases. The end notes were interesting, although some of them were things I already knew. But the footnotes were always things I already knew - but for some reason I kept checking them anyway. Until I got to a footnote about "coffin nails," which was wildly wrong. I thought everyone knew that this colloquial phrase meant a cigarette, but apparently I was wrong.

It will probably be quite a while before I read this one again, but it stays in my bookcase until then.

Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous!!! These stories are so timeless. I didn't really get into the Cabbages and Kings arc, but there wasn't one single story of the rest that didn't awe me with genius. ( )
