I was expecting much more after reading the blurbs on the back cover but I couldn't make it to the end...was flipping pages skimming like crazy and eventually gave up. I can't think of anything good to say about it. ( )

High on drama but lacking in actual story. ( )

While this was supposed to be a great mystery, it was a real challenge to finish the book. It was difficult to read because there were too many characters and story lines to follow with any ease or contiunity. It almost seemed like there should be a reference guide to help the reader follow the characters. And then the book just ends. If you want a good, nail biting mystery, I don't recommend this book. A relunctant oceanographer accepts an honor on behalf of her great-grandfather, she also receives a family legacy. This is now her only tangible link to her family, but it holds secrets that others want and show no mercy in attaining it. Jumping from archeological digs in Ephesus to the glitz of Monaco to the serenity of the English countryside and finally to the arctic tundra in Norway, the explorers try to solve the mystery surrounding the journal.

I enjoyed this book, and the only thing I really had a problem with was the ending. Or rather disappointing last couple of chapters. It seemed that it was pushed for a tidy end, which just left me feeling that something really wasn't right or that it was too tidy.

I received this book through the GoodReads First Read. ( )

The Explorers Code is Kitty Pilgrim's first novel. It has many elements that make it difficult to pin down what mystery sub-genre it belongs in. There is a treasure hunt aspect to it but also adventure, romance, scientific discovery, arctic exploration, medical mystery and government spies. Ms. Pilgrim worked as a reporter at CNN for many years so I presume she gained a lot of material from that job. The summary of the book is from the inside cover:

"When the prominent young oceanographer, Cordelia Stapleton, is invited to a glamorous gala in Monaco, she has no idea her life is about to change. Wealthy philanthropist, and dashing archaeologist John Sinclair, presents her with the posthumous award for her great great-grandfather, Elliot Stapleton — a famous Victorian polar explorer. She also receives Stapleton’s personal journal from 1908, and learns she is heir to a missing land deed – a valuable document that is also sought by consortium of underworld criminals.

Cordelia and John Sinclair team up to search for the deed in some of the most sophisticated and romantic places in the world – the principality of Monaco, a Mediterranean voyage of the Queen Victoria ocean liner, a lavish country estate outside of London and a palatial apartment in Paris. Chased by a gang of ruthless killers, the search continues to exotic locales such as the archaeological ruins of Ephesus, Turkey and the high arctic archipelago of Svalbard, Norway. Along the way Cordelia and Sinclair encounter a team of British virologists trying to decode the genome of the 1918 pandemic, a Russian oligarch and his entourage, a famous supermodel, a world champion fencer, and a cult of religious fanatics. Filled with high adventure, elegant lifestyle, and international intrigue, The Explorer’s Code is a welcome addition to the successful tradition of romantic thrillers."

I loved the characters and would like to see them in a series. The pace was super fast but what makes the book so exciting is the exotic locales that the characters travel to. Ms. Pilgrim's descriptions could be used in a travel brochure because they make me want to see these places in person. They are light and fun. All of the previous treasure hunts that I have read were written by men who do not describe the changing locales but stick to writing about what happened. Maybe this is a difference between male and female writers. I don't know. All I know is that there is something extra in Ms. Pilgrim's setting descriptions that click with me.

This is another book that I could not put down. I highly recommend it. ( )
