In the new wave era of the early 1980s around Australia - but particularly in Sydney - mods became a familiar sight go-go dancing on hip nightclub dance floors, shopping for soul and R'n'B vinyl in indie record stores, ferreting for ex-army parkas and vintage stilettos in op shops and zooming around the city en masse on shiny, supped-up Vespa and Lambretta motor scooters - flashing past in a blur of mirrors, black and white op art cheques, red-white-and-blue union jacks and targes. ankle-freezer pants and white go-go boots. At its peak, the Mod scene may not have had more than a few thousand followers Australia-wide, but what they lacked in numbers they more than made up for in commitment. Mod had all the elements of a cult in that it had its own language, dress codes, fanzines, bands, in-jokes, scooter clubs, pubs and venues, special events, icons, fads and, of course, their friends and foes - many in the form of the other post-Punk, New Wave subcultures, from Mod's close cousin the Rude Boy, to the more temperamental Oi Skinhead. Stark Raving Mod! Attempts to capture in photos taken at the time and the words of those who were there, the sights, the sounds, the fashions, the music, the characters, the lifestyle, the violence, the drugs, the scooters, the attitudes from outsiders, the camaraderie and, most of all, the fun. Stark Raving Mod! Is a fascinating insight into the world of a New Wave Australian youth subculture and takes a look at what life was like for a young person living in urban Australia in the early 1980s - especially one who wanted to stand out from the crowd.
