Claire Miller lives in a speculative world, a world where vampires rule as a monarchy separated by regions. When Claire turns eighteen her mother excitedly takes her to register as a blood donor and just hours later she's being whisked off to become a vampire to join the royal family because her blood was deemed pure.

There's a relative peace in Claire's world but living in the castle opens her eyes to the stability and the validity of that peace. The region Claire lives in claims to be the most peaceful and keeps the way of life in other regions secret.

This is one of those books that brought out emotions which made me wish I could reach into the book and ring the ears of the protagonists. I enjoyed the story very much but Claire drove me batty. I tried to excuse her being all over the place with her thoughts on her age and the fact that she has no one to depend on for support. Her mother was emotionally absent and is obsessed with vampires, so her decision would be obvious. Claire was indecisive, she was constantly back and forth with her decisions, she was naive, and repetitive, she continually reiterates her final(not so much) conclusions seeming to forgot she made them already. Every time I thinks she's resolved with her decisions, she's back to wavering again. I know the decisions she needs to make would not be easy and she could make the wrong ones, but I felt she just needed to make them already and deal with the consequences. Okay, that's mean, but her situation seems dire and she has no other choice, so whining over them isn't getting her anywhere.

Claire had me so confused I didn't pay attention to that tense feeling that something seemed off. I found myself apologizing(just a tad) to Claire for being so hard on her when that shocker of a ending just threw me off kilter. I could not believe the revelations Claire learned.

This story was a unique take on the vampire genre, I thought it was good concept and a good story. Even with Claire's constant fickleness the story was interesting and kept me tuned in. ( )

Decent storyline, though it dragged some. TERRIBLE editing. ( )

A really bland book with superficial love triangle and non-existent world-building. I don't even have the strength to rant about it. Read it only if you have nothing else at hand. ( )

Claire had just turned 18, she was ready for her big birthday party, ready to get dressed up, ready to dance, ready to visit with friends, maybe meet a nice guy, but first she had to register with the Vampire Society Blood Donation Bank. She was happy to do so, happy to get her ID card along with everyone else who supported the regions Vampire King and Queen and their monarchy. But what she wasn't so happy about was becoming one of them just because she was found to have pure blood. It really put a damper on her whole life plans. But people have a way of being persuaded, and Claire's mother was going to be taken very well care of in exchange for her eternal life. Shouldn't be much of a choice...eternal life, eternal beauty, no sickness. No sunlight, no children, no husband, no family. She chose Vampire. They made it very hard to not accept, she was afterall, the princess who could possible save them all. So through a very painful physical change and an even more dramatic emotional change, Claire became part of the Vampire royalty and set out to be introduced as the new heir. But some did not approve. Some were out to hurt her. Someone had to stop them. Only one could do that, her blood mate, that shadowy figure that had a unique pull on Claire, but she never seemed to be able to find. Would he be able to save her in time? And would he be the saviour she needed, or just another complication in her already complicated life?
I will definately be reading more in the series. ( )

At first I thought this book was going to have a little too much teen age drama and started to put it down, but then it changed and got very interesting. I read last night till me eyes didn't focus and started reading before breakfast this morning. Good thing DH thought i needed to eat and stuck eggs and toast in front of me. ( )
