Selected Shorts is a weekly radio broadcast, produced by Symphony Space and recorded live on stage in downtown New York City. Each of the short stories commonly is performed / read by a different, professional actor. This collection includes seven such stories, chosen for their humor. The stories are as follows:

Jonathan Lethem's "The Spray" performed by Robert Sean Leonard; Miranda July's ""The Swim Team" performed by Parker Posey; Saki's "The Schartz-Metterklume Method" performed by Marian Seldes; Harry Mathews' "Country Cooking from Central France: Roast Boned Rolled Stuffed Shoulder of Lamb (Farce Double)" performed by Isaiah Sheffer; Thomas Meehan's "Yma Dream" performed by Christine Baranski; Julia Slavin's "Covered" performed by Alec Baldwin; Philip Roth's "The Conversion of the Jews" performed by Jerry Zaks.

I found the collection generally entertaining in daily commutes. Brief descriptions of each of the stories are given in my "comments". (

A nice relief from my (mostly) heavy June list. How can you go wrong with readers that include Alec Baldwin and Stephen Colbert? I must admit that I did not listen to Christine Baranski reading Thomas Meehan’s Yma Dream. I saw this on TV when Anne Bancroft originally did it (with Lee J. Cobb as the silent, dead-pan therapist) and I just couldn't bear to intrude on my memory of it. (
