"Frank, funny and helpful."--The Atlanta Journal-Constitution For the millions who loved A Year by the Sea comes a memoir of a woman who awakens at midlife to find wisdom in a most unlikely place  In this beautifully written and frequently funny memoir, Catherine Goldhammer, newly separated, along with her twelve-year-old daughter, starts life anew in a cottage by the sea, in a rustic town where live bait is sold from vending machines. Partly to please her daughter and partly for reasons not clear to her at the time, she begins this year of transition by purchasing six baby chickens--whose job, she comes to suspect, is to pull her and her daughter forward out of one life and into another. An unforgettable story filled with hope and grace, Still Life with Chickens shows how transcendent wisdom can be found in the most unlikely of places.… (mehr)

Eat Pray Love: Eine Frau auf der Suche nach allem quer durch Italien, Indien und Indonesien von Elizabeth Gilbert (aleahmarie)
aleahmarie: Both memoirs feature strong women who are starting over after failed relationships. "Still Life with Chickens" is more a practical treatise to the idealism of "Eat, Pray, Love"... but both are equally enjoyable.

"I did not have a year in Provence or a villa under the Tuscan sun. I did not have a farm in Africa. It turned out that my life was not someone else's book. It was not a picture and it was not still. It was moving, variegated, unpredictable. It was a life, with chickens."
A charming little memoir. ( )

When I got to the end of this book I cried. I was expecting a sort of funny little story about a divorced women and her kid who got chickens as a way of getting through the divorce and move and all. I wasn't expecting a book that would have meaning. ( )

3.5 stars... quick, charming - she would've been annoying if the book were any longer though as I didn't really empathize with most of her eccentricities ( )

A wry memoir of a woman starting over in midlife. Soon after her separation, she realizes that she can no longer afford to live in the affluent suburbs. She purchases some chicks and she moves her daughter, her home to a ramshackle house near the sea.

I usually don't read memoirs, but a friend recommended this and I'm glad she did. ( )

Reading this after "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Barbara Kingsolver was NOT the way to go. A very light book. She's a poet, so occasionally there were nice passages, but I really felt there was no depth to her story - a year of angst and moving house. Hey, we've all had that. But we don't necessarily feel the urge to write a book about it. And sometimes she portrayed herself as so ditzy, that, at times, I was just really annoyed. ( )

"There is no use trying," said Alice; "one can't believe impossible things."
"I dare say you haven't had much practice," said the Queen. "When I was your age I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes, I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."
