It takes a special kind of best friend to realize that what you need most in your life is a murder investigation. Advice columnist Molly Forrester is still trying to break through as a journalist, and her best friends are completely--if a little ghoulishly--supportive. And when Manhattan advertising maverick Garth Henderson is murdered, she just might finally get that chance with this juicy assignment: an exclusive interview with Gwen Lincoln, the victim's ex-wife and the prime suspect.Was the murder a calculated business move, a crime of passion, or something more sinister? Is the killer lurking among the employees of the rival advertising firm Garth just purchased? Or among "The Harem," his six beautiful, talented, and ruthlessly competitive creative directors? Or on the staff of fashion designer Emile Trebask, once Garth's client and now Gwen's business partner?While racing to solve the ad world's most notorious murder on deadline, Molly must also grapple with her manipulative editor, who always has her own angle on everything. To further complicate matters, one of her best friends may either have found true love or a relationship that will destroy her. And Molly's own ex-boyfriend is circling the story, trying to get his own scoop - and get back into Molly's good graces. Can Molly handle all these competing interests? Can her current boyfriend, NYPD homicide detective Kyle Edwards?Never one to sidestep a challenge, in work or in love, Molly digs in her four-inch heels and presses forward. In Manhattan, you stand by your deal. Even if it kills you. Killer Deal is the dynamic third installment in Sheryl J. Anderson's delightful Molly Forrester series.… (mehr)

I'd rank this one in personal like-ability as #3 out of the four books.

Molly is finally assigned a feature article, instead of stumbling across a dead body and getting a story out of it. This time the body's been dead for weeks and she just has to write an in-depth story about the widow. Who's the prime suspect.

I cannot read this book without thinking of Robert Palmer's Simply Irresistible music video. The murder victim (who is killed before the story takes place, so a bit of a different spin on the typical murder mystery, where the murder takes place during the story) is an advertising executive at the top of his game. HIs secret to success? His harem. His top 6 executives are all women, and all, of course, are stunningly gorgeous. Hence the Robert Palmer flashbacks.

There are a lot of obvious reasons people would have wanted Garth dead, but Molly's research and interviews start revealing the more hidden reasons the man was such a blight and starts to put her relationship with her NYPD detective-boyfriend in jeopardy.

I am not afraid to admit that while reading these books (or re-reading them, as the case may be), I became emotionally invested in these characters. Molly, Kyle, Tricia, Cassady - all of them. So in some ways this book was as hard a read as the second book - Ms. Anderson doesn't shy away from painful conflict portrayed in a realistic fashion. It's not too heavy or angsty, but in Molly's world, there are consequences for the actions she takes and the decisions she makes.

I think I've only mentioned it two or three times, so I'll say it again: I'm really disappointed that Ms. Anderson stopped at four books. I'd have loved to see where these characters went over time. ( )

I found this book surprisingly enjoyable. Not because I had any reason to expect that it wouldn't be, more because I've had such a hard time finding new authors I like that I'd run out of hope. I liked everything from the engaging plot to the interesting characters to the -- at times -- laugh-out-loud throwaway lines.

An example -- several of the characters run into each other at an out-of-the-way bar.

================

"What are you doing here?" [one] asked sharply as they stopped before us.

"Collecting signatures for a petition to stop rhetorical questions," [the other] responded.

================

And I particularly liked the relationship between the main character and her policeman boyfriend. It was believable but a much more realistic portrayal between the professional and amateur detective that keeps getting in the way.

I didn't love everything -- there were a few too many moments where the protagonist *knew* that someone was the killer only to be wrong. And then she'd *know* again several chapters later. With the writing being as good as it is, though, that was a small price to pay.

I'm happy to see that there are several other books in this series. Looking forward to reading them! ( )
