Writing a book is a voyage of research, creation, discovery, validation, obsession, and re-writing. The voyage begins with the familiar and rises beyond the possible into new spheres of reality. Many amazing people shaped this story and I am grateful to everyone who helped directly and indirectly to make Phontaine’s Gifts possible.I am grateful to the men I knew who served in naval special forces during the Viet Nam War. Their stories helped me realize the extraordinary endurance and achievement that is possible when people know what to do and how to do it. The SEALs and the River Rats provided me with an informal education of how tough humans can be and how courage can be a way of life.
I am grateful to Dr. Getachew Tikubet of the Addis BioFarm in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He introduced me to sustainable farming and its promise for ending extreme poverty in developing countries.
Dr. Aseffa Abreha of the Ethiopian Social Rehabilitation and Development Fund allowed me an insider’s perspective of planning at the level of national development to help communities provide for their needs. He also invited me to assist in helping Ethiopia recover from decades of famines, wars, and droughts.

The first half of the book was a fast-paced action story that drew a vivid picture of what was coming and disaster striking. The ending, however, seemed a little rushed and seemed to come together quickly and conveniently. I would have enjoyed seeing that part of the book developed more or I would love to see a follow saying what happens next.
