Sheriff Scott Dupree's got more problems than he can handle. He's alpha of his small werewolf pack and coming up for re-election as sheriff in a year. On top of this, his mother is casting love spells to find Scott a mate. It's all Scott can do to keep the town and pack under control, let alone his urges to mate. Ted Canedo is openly gay, a disgraced ex-cop from New Orleans. His patrol partner was killed on duty, and Ted took the blame for taking protection money from the store owner to save his partner's wife and kid's grief. No one knew Ted was in love with his partner, not even his partner. Having him die in Ted's arms killed something inside Ted too. When the moon is full, and Scott's momma works her magic, Ted's erotic dreams and his work as a PI bring him to St. Jerome and sexy, straight Scott. Scott's stunned to learn his wolf is gay and wants to mate with Ted. Ted refuses to become involved with a straight man, much less a werewolf, terrified to risk his heart again if it means he has to watch Scott fight to the death for his right to claim Ted as his mate.… (mehr)

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars, but decided on 3.

I loved Ted! He is a gay cop who took the fall for his partner and now is a private eye. He ends up going out to the bayou and finds an attraction to the local sheriff, Scott. Scott of course is a shapeshifter.

Here's why it's a 3 instead of 4: the trope of "instant mate love". While I love the whole "mate" passion, this gay for you mate thing was just a bit to swallow in this one. I had to roll my eyes a bit.

That being said, I actually liked the book and moved right into the second book.

"Holy shit."
"Now isn't the place for swearing."
"No, Mom," Scott didn't hold back on the sarcasm, "It's the place for voodoo and dead cats."
"Hush." She waved at him. "Keep digging."

It could have been great. The first half was very promising with some orignal ideas and a slow introduction to the main characters and the setting for the romance.
BUT instead of believable or realistic characters the MCs remained pale and not very memorable. The story drifted very fast into sappy land and the well prepared for finale was very disappointing because none of the introduced "problems" was really dealt with (suddely being gay because the inner wolf is, falling in love with another straight guy, falling in love with a straight werewolf, voodoo and a lot more promising stuff that could have made this a great read).
It had some great humor (see citation on the top) in the first half, a few interesting side characters. So this is a mixed rating: 4 stars for the first half, 1,5 for the second. ( )

I really enjoyed Bayou Dreams. I appreciated the different feel that this story had from the shifter books I have read lately. The premise of a were who's wolf is gay but the man himself is not gives a whole different look at the GFY theme.

The characters Ted and Scott were great but my favorite was definitely Scott's mom Mrs. Dupree. She was a bit of crazy and constantly had me laughing at her "Spell er...Prayers". And there is definitely more to that cat of hers. ( )
