To Brie Or Not To Brie by Avery Aames is the 4th book in the delectable A Cheese Shop Mystery series. Things are going good in Providence, Charlotte has gotten engaged to Jordan, she is helping to plan her best friend Meredith's wedding to her cousin Matthew. Life is good. That is, until Jordan's sisters, Jacky, estranged husband, Giacomo, shows up in town. With ice cream from the Igloo Ice Cream Parlor, across the street from The Cheese Shop, Charlotte has come up with a wonderful Brie blueberry ice cream. Baskin-Robbins doesn't have anything on Charlotte. Then Giacomo is found dead in the freezer of the ice cream parlor, having been struck over the with a 5 gallon container of Brie Blueberry ice cream. Soon, most everyone wants to accuse Jacky of the murder. Charlotte is sure she had nothing to do with and starts to check out other suspects. What about Hugo, the owner of the ice cream parlor, he seems to leave town quite a bit for days at a time. Or maybe Vinnie, Giacomo's brother, who has gambling debts and an inheritance would be most welcome. Or maybe it is someone else who is having money problems. All the characters from the previous books are back to entertain the reader. Charlotte's grandmother is putting on a production of Hamlet. Sylvia, Matthew's ex is there to torment everyone, that she does so well. And Rebecca..... Rebecca is favorite character to get upset with, but at the same time she is most helpful in assisting Charlotte and at the same time so funny. Another great addition to an enjoyable series. Lots of cheese talk and recipes as before. Looking forward to the next book. Charlotte Bessette, owner of The Cheese Shop (Fromagerie Bessette) is busy with her best friend and her cousin's upcoming wedding; her grandmother's production of Hamlet in the city square; and deciding on her own wedding date. On top of everything, a body is found in the ice cream parlor's freezer. Too many characters to keep up with even though I've read this series in order. I like cheese and wine and this series, but just did not enjoy this. Too much focus on everything around the mystery going on, and too little on the mystery itself. So-so. I really like the characters and the setting, and I like the cheese shop - but the sales pitch that goes with almost every single mention of a cheese or a wine gets annoying. I find myself muttering "blah blah blah" and skipping over it. I don't mind an occasional description, but it's over used and constantly sounds like she's selling. I also found the arrogance of Charlotte's friends ("you must investigate this murder!") to be insanely ridiculous - and a turn off for me. I enjoy the amateur sleuth definition of a cozy, but not the attitude of "I know better (or "you know better", in this case) than the police and I can solve this crime where they can't". The murder plot itself grabbed my attention right from the start - I like the back story of Jordan's sister coming to the fore, and learning more about her. But I found it dragging and I was losing interest by about midway through - it felt a bit messy, the plot. I also guessed the murderer fairly early in the story. Overall, not the strongest book in the series, but I'll gladly read the next and hope for tighter writing, with fewer sales pitches.
