A neat little item, one of only 295 (score!) printed and released by the Humanities Research Center (now the Harry Ransom Center) at the University of Texas at Austin for Manuscript Society of America. Borges was a visiting professor for the first time at UT in 1961 and several times thereafter. In 1964 he published the sonnet "Texas" in his book El otro, el mismo. In 1967, before total blindness left him unable to write, Borges wrote out the sonnet for a friend who donated it to UT. It's in a tiny, crooked nearly sloppy scrawl. This work, after a one page introduction by John O. Kirkpatrick, presents Borges's two manuscript pages in facsimile, then the sonnet in print, then a translation of the sonnet by Mark Strand (a poet and translator in his own right). It's a handsome little booklet of four leaves in brown wrappers. The sonnet by Borges is well-written and evocative. I take issue with Strand's translation of several lines, however. (I have, privately, produced my own translation I think is better. No English translation I've managed to dig up on the web attempts to replicate the sonnet rhyme scheme.) But, it is a wonderful bit of Borgesian ephemera and Texana rolled into one. ( ) keine Rezensionen | Rezension hinzufügen
