caimanjosh: Both of these series feature great characterization, good writing, and a bare-knuckle, realistic approach to fantasy, as opposed to much of the high fantasy work out there.
Fantasy, wie ich sie mag: Nicht zu heldenhaft, nicht zu pathetisch, dunkel. Die Charaktere detailreich gezeichnet, nicht zu hastig erzählt. Sehr schön, klare Empfehlung! Gleich weiter mit Band zwei. ( )
Abercrombie versammelt eine Runde an klassischen Fantasy-Charakteren: Logen, einen Barbaren; Jezal, einen Soldaten; Bayaz, einen Magier; Glokta, einen... verkrüppelten Inquisitor?
Nun gut, nicht alles ist standard. Vor allem nicht das Setting, das durchaus in unserer Zukunft spielen sollte, halt mit Magie und nur verschütteten Resten unserer Zivilisation.
Krieg und Liebe gibt es immer noch. Und Intrigen und Mord und... eine spannende Geschichte, aus mehreren Gesichtspunkten erzählt. ( )
Viel Krieg, nur geringer Fantasyanteil, dennoch gut zu lesen. Das Buch weicht von dem was ich "Mittelklassefantasy" nenne ab - es präsentiert nicht die "üblichen" Fantasygeschöpfe wie Elfen oder Drachen, tatsächlich spielt nur das Fantasyelement der Magier überhaupt eine Rolle. Ansonsten ist das Buch eher realistisch gehalten, in einer fiktionalen Welt in der politische Ränke das Leben der wichtigen Leute, ja auch der eher unwichtigen Menschen bestimmen. Die Hauptcharaktere sind eindeutig "anders" als in den meisten Büchern die man kennt, allerdings weichen sie allesamt in derselben Dimension von üblichen Romanfiguren ab - sie sind sehr direkt, oft zynisch, insgesamt zunächst eher unsympathisch. Irgendwann kristallisieren sich dann etwas individuellere Charakterzüge heraus, und ab diesem Zeitpunkt beginnt man die Charaktere trotz ihres meist zweifelhaften Charakters auf die ein oder andere Weise zu schätzen. Insgesamt ein Buch das ich weiterempfehlen würde, wenn man mal von dem "Einheitsbrei", den man heute oft im Fantasyregal vorgesetzt bekommt entgehen möchte. Ich bin gespannt auf den zweiten Band. ( )
I really like the portrayal of (most of) the characters, with the possible exception of Ferro, who's a little too stereotypical, but since I haven't seen that much of her yet, I'll wait for the second book. The plot is very good, the world-building too, but I had to skip quite a lot - graphic torture's not my thing. I don't regret buying the book, but I'm glad my library has them so I won't have to buy the others and still find out what happens next. ( )
