For my money, Jim Woodring's The Frank Book is an urtext for our times, conveying the sort of full understanding of the life experience that any number of self-help, religious, and motivational texts can only hint at. If, as Woodring states in his afterword, Frank is "innocent but not noble", then his status as a cartoon everyman is only further enhanced. Frank is a generic anthropomorph, but he is not lacking in specificity or purpose - Woodring has the courage to show us what we are seeing, even if we expend much of our waking effort in trying not to see it. From any number of angles, The Frank Book is indispensable. Put down your bullets and read it today! ( )
