A ghost father of two ghost children tells his kids scary stories so they can go to sleep. It took him 3 stories for his kids to finally fall asleep. ( ) “The Haunted Hamburger” is a traditional children’s book written by David LaRochelle. The story begins with two ghost children asking their father to tell them a scary story before bed. The first story the father ghost told was about their uncle who flew around trying to scare people, but ended up getting scared himself. The second story was about a boastful ghost who got scared into humility by a haunted hamburger. And the third story was about the Big Bad Granny Ghost who came to scare little ghosts who don’t want to sleep by being affectionate toward them. The book was in short-story format and I really enjoyed it. It had two stories in which the moral was to be kind and humble. All the stories were funny with a hint of silliness, with topics like haunted hamburgers and big bad grannies. Two extension activities I came up with for this book would include having the children write and illustrate their own scary stories. Whether it be one their parents have told them or one they have heard from their friends. Another idea would be to have the students draw their idea of what ghosts look like? Is it simply a white sheet, or are they more dynamic? What’s a parent ghost to do when his ghost children won’t go to sleep? Tell bedtime stories, of course. So when Franny and Frankie demand a scary story before bed, Father Ghost gives in. But one story is never enough. So Father Ghost shares three short stories, each one scarier than the last. The stories include The Scary Baby, The Haunted Hamburger, and The Big Bad Granny. Each ghost story concludes with a funny and clever twist ending that will leave you laughing all the way to bed. The Bottom Line: David LaRochelle’s collection of three short ghost stories is a hit for Halloween. These “spooky” stories are humorous and fun to read. I loved the surprise twist endings, especially the one at the very end, and kids will too. Additionally, Paul Meisel’s illustrations perfectly match the hilarious tone of the book. This spooktacularly funny book will be read again and again by kids in Grades 2 - 5. These ghost stories are very highly recommended for everyone.
