Minister's wife, sometime sleuth, and culinary artist Faith Sibley Fairchild is intrigued by rumors of mysterious doings at Hubbard House - an elegant, secluded retirement home for the well-heeled Yankees of Aleford, Massachusetts. Determined to do some surreptitious snooping, she joins the pricey retreat's flu-depleted kitchen staff, only to witness an aging resident collapse face-first into a bowl of Faith's hot and savory boillon. But it isn't until a blackmailing drug dealer turns up dead in Faith's bedroom that the amateur investigator realizes that murder not only happens at Hubbard, it's the specialty of the house! And Faith's own demise might very well be the next item on the menu.… (mehr)

With this book, I've read the first five of Page's Faith Fairchild series. In [b:the Body in the Bouillon|538242|The Body in the Bouillon A Faith Fairchild Mystery|Katherine Hall Page|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1175628991s/538242.jpg|525653] Faith is asked by her Aunt Chat to check on an assisted-living residence in a neighboring town, where Chat's friend Howard was living until his recent death. He had mentioned some suspicions in a letter.
When Faith shows up to visit a parishioner and do a little snooping, she is dragooned into volunteering in the kitchen. She meets a number of interesting characters but isn't quite sure what, if anything, is amiss until one night when a storm strands her at Hubbard House. Having taken the opportunity to do some middle-of-the-night snooping, she returns to her guest room to find a body in her bed! Events begin coming fast and furiously until the surprise ending ... and then there's another surprise ending, just when it seemed everything was settled. Faith must fit her (somewhat police-sanctioned) investigations in around mothering her toddler Ben, preparing for Christmas, and comforting her minister husband who has The Seminary Intern from Hell to deal with. A very good entry in the series. ( )

This was the first KHP book I picked up. I was pretty disappointed in this book.

When I picked up the book, I read the back and saw that it was a minister's wife who gets caught up in a murder at a nursing home. I was disappointed because the minister and his wife did not seem to have the morals that I would expect of a minister and his wife. I understand that people are "human" but I would have like the author to have not had the minister and his wife cursing and drinking. It was not necessary for the story and it turned me off.

I also found it completely unrealistic for the main character to just be let into a nursing home. My grandmother was in a nursing home for almost 10 years before she passed. They did not let just anybody come into the nursing home and volunteer. So I found that just a little far fetched.

I understand that the main character is not an older lady but for some reason I could not picture her young in my mind. Even as I write this, I am thinking of an older lady in my mind. I just cannot picture a younger lady getting herself involved in the situations presented in this book.

Overall, I was not pleased and I do no plan on purchasing another KHP book. My first impression was not a good one. I have no doubt that she must have other books that are better because she is such an established author...I just will not be one purchasing any of them. ( )
